Looking for pins in a County road today. Schonstedt would work for about 10 seconds and then just start screaming. Put a new battery in as the User Guide says and still the same results. I bought a cheap Treasure Hunter's detector to get me by, but it won't even detect a iron pin I can see. A Surveyor without a metal detector might as well be on annual leave.
Hope you can find a spare to keep around. We bought 2 used ones from a sales company that rents equipment etc. half price of a new one. Can't beat that to keep em around the office.

That would depend on the kinds of monuments a Surveyor is trying to recover (stones, wood posts, trees, etc.) In nearly 50 years of surveying, I have looked for VERY FEW metallic Corner Monuments (but the magnetic locator was a godsend [at times] when I did).

When I was working out in the woods for 30 years I didn't know what a Schonstedt was either. Now after 13 years as a Private I've learned you would never survive without one. Randomly digging in a County road intersection would not be a fun experience. The finicky Surveyors bury their pins a foot to two feet deep. I hate those guys. A Grader never goes deeper than 3 inches deep. A six inch depth is plenty deep enough. Stone corners in wheat country are not very prevalent.
I have 3 metal detectors.
Shonstedt 92 Primary
Shonstedt GA72 Backup
Javad super small thing. Good for long hikes.
The 92 gets the MOST use. Due to it GOES in the atv box. The Javad one is tiny, and goes in my pocket, for those long trecks, into the wilderness.
It only functions with the Javad LS. Bluetooth.
The reason the 92 gets the most use, is that the LS is usually cooking out a shot... un attended, and I am nearby searching for additional monuments. I like a detector that is independent.
IF I were to buy a new one, I'd try a Sub surface inst one. The AHTD tested them ALL, and were very pleased with the ML-1.
But, every surveyor needs a backup detector.
So, get ya one!

PS. my 92 has been in for repairs 1x, and I fixed it 1x.
They are HANDY, but not the toughest one in the pile.
Have the Subsurface one. Not as productive as the Shony.
Have two GA52
First one bought new in late 70s
Second one from EBay 10yrs ago
