I witnessed this very thing (raising a corner over an existing stone deep below a county road) one time helping Mr. Cow...I was a young lad just getting my feet wet in what I would find to be a very rewarding career choice. Thank you!

I always set an IP next to a found stone so the next surveyor or land owner can identify that is the corner stone.?ÿ Measuring to the stone or IP, what does it matter??ÿ The stone is many times a foot or 6 inches wide already.?ÿ
Not any granite around here and none of the early Surveyors were going to transport any across all the waterways and sinkholes around here.
Lots of regular old iron ore, sandstone, gravel and impermeable clay.
Some of the most peculiar monuments I've found were clay formed into half squares and a couple feet long and set in fields of sandy loam.
Button pushers seeking perfection will only find the object that matches the distances given from other smaller objects and not recognize the stone as being the corner.?ÿ After a couple of iterations like that no one will be looking for a stone.?ÿ Fools.
