Robotic TS - +/-1mm ATR
> Thanks for the tip. The ability to point to a normal prism with ATR seems like a pretty darn good thing. Just out of curiosity, does the power search function do an adequate job of finding the prism in cluttered environments with multiple reflective surfaces?
We use both the 360 prism and single Leica pro prism and have never had a problem with either one.
I havent used the robot much, however talking to my crews this morning, (one having used a 1200 without power search at another company) said it is definately worth the extra cost.
As to finding the prism, I have found that every robot brand is different. We just finished a as-built survey of a large regional hospital and used the robot almost exclusively. Never once did the robot have trouble keeping lock, even when going between the 100's of cars in the parking lot or when a car passed by did it lose the prism and track the car.
The only instance that I am aware that we had problems finding/tracking was trying to go over 1500' in heavy, heavy underbrush through a cut line.
Huh?
Leica TPS1200+
Automatic Target Recognition (ATR)
Automatic fine pointing - Uniform measurement accuracy
With ATR, you only need to point roughly with the optical sight and trigger a measurement; TPS1200+ does the rest fully automatically. The infrared beam transmitted from the telescope is reflected back by the prism and analyzed instantly. TPS1200+ moves the telescope, fine points to the center of the prism and measures. As you don’t need to fine point or focus, you measure much quicker and more relaxed
Optional for motorized TPS1200+
Fast measurements
High uniform accuracy independent of operator and light conditions
Measurements to standard prisms (no need for active target)
A great aid for all work
Particularly advantageous for repetition measurements and when measuring to a large number of points

I think we have a difference in terminology here, Automatic target recognition is not the same as active target recognition. Trimble uses a flashing led that the instrument looks for and is separate than focusing etc. on the prism. I believe trimble holds the patent on such but may be wrong.

My fault. I misread your words.
You are correct, as far as I know, Trimble, et al is the only one with that.
Hello, first post here.
I found this site through twitter and I have enjoyed the forum questions and answers. I have worked on Trimble equipment for about 10 years.
For a lower cost choice you can't go wrong with an older 5600 series gun and there are still plenty of parts available for repairs. As far as a new instrument I would go for a VX to add scanning and video. The new TSC3 is out and they are moving away from Survey Controller to Trimble Access. I don't have a lot of experience with access yet, but from what I have heard from customers It is more intuitive than SC.
Good Luck with whatever you decide on.
