"your guy was out and set my corner, but that's not where it was"

We were hired to set control and locate property corners for a street reconstruction,,,,,,,,,2009.
Got a call last week to set block corners and find all property corners we found in 2009 and replace ones that were removed.

"Mam, we just found it, a different surveyor set it."

"Well, I hired xyz to survey it and that's not where they put it, it got moved or something during all the construction."

"Mam, in 2009 we located it, and yesterday we relocated it and we show it within 1/8 of an inch from the 2009 position".

"That can't be, it lined up with my fence and now it doesn't, and I can't find my back corners."

" We are only authorized to set corners along the street that were disturbed, we can't work in the alleys for this project."

"Well, I can't tell if my front corners are right without the back corners."

"Ok, I'll chat with the engineer and see if they will pay for that also"................

Oh, boy, the third call so far..................

So the corner you set is wrong, and she can't tell if it's wrong without the back corners?

yes,,,,,,,

Only I didn't set anything,,,,,,,,,,

She hired it done, I found it, looks good, then 7 years later found it again in the same spot.

I made the mistake of putting a stake next to it, learned my lesson there....................

The PC got pulled over by the homeowner, so he went in the alley and recovered both her corners.

Now she is happy, he said her fence has a bend in it, probably construction by her neighbor, they are fighting with each other about something, PC said he wasn't waiting for authorization, quicker to just do it than to listen to tales of woe.

I did get authorization after the fact anyway

He said she was really nice, guess they know each other from HS.........

We often had to "re-set" front corners either destroyed or covered during construction of water lines. During surveying for the engineering of the lines we would get a location (coordinates) and offset (normally two tape to nails set, also with coordinates). Contractors were contractually required to have the corners re-set by a Licensed Surveyor and would usually hire us. Normally it was just a few minutes time to find control, set the corner, and check it from the two taped nails.

That's a good way, usually they rip and tear so much up it would be tough to offset a nail close enough, but they were careful during this project, we walked through it in a few days, reset 28 corners with rebar/cap and a handful of drilled ones into concrete, but many of them are still out there from 2009 undisturbed. It looks so much better-those streets were awful..........
