Henry David Thoreau was born July 12, 1817 in Concord, Massachusetts, the third of four children of John and Cynthia Thoreau. Although he did not gain fame during his lifetime, he has certainly achieved it in the years since.

2017 is the bicentennial of Thoreauƒ??s birth and, as one might expect, there are dozens of events planned to celebrate this milestone. A comprehensive listing of these events can be found on the Thoreau Bicentennial website at:

http://thoreaubicentennial.org/&apos ;">ThoreauBicentennial.org

Look carefully and youƒ??ll find Rendezvous 2017 listed among those events. Surveyors Historical Society is pleased to have the opportunity to be a part of this year-long celebration of another famous surveyor.

Most people know Thoreau as the man who lived alone in a cabin at Walden Pond for a couple of years, then wrote a book about it but Thoreau also had a substantial career as a land surveyor in and around Concord, Massachusetts.

In 1847, Thoreau described his life for the members of his Harvard class thus:

"I am a School master, a Private Tutor, a Surveyor, a Gardener, a Farmer, a House Painter, a Carpenter, a Mason, a Day-Laborer, a Pencil-Maker, a Writer, and sometimes a Poet."

In a journal entry dated April 29, 1856, Thoreau noted that "Surveying seems a noble employment which brings you within hearing of the birds."

In 1849, Thoreau had a handbill printed listing the services he offered and bought a notebook which he inscribed ƒ??Field Notes of Surveys made by Henry D. Thoreau since 1849.ƒ? Over the next 11 years, he did more than 200 surveys.

Rendezvous 2017 will search for the footsteps of Henry David Thoreau and you are cordially invited to join us in that search. Complete details can be found at:

Just to listen to the Bama/Cape Cod patois would be interesting. I think it would keep one awake. 😉

The homestead is bordering on being able to be occupied. Re-shingling the roof should be done next week, drywall is being 'mudded' as we speak and bedroom floors are being painted. I bet I'll be living there in two weeks. Half the windows are installed, but the work is progressing.
I have been busy outside cleaning up after years of over growth. It's been fun!
