I get it with the fixed leg thing, it is just not my preference. I usually set the length of the legs and let them be but if I want to adjust the length for whatever reason I prefer to have the option, making a goofy setup to accommodate a fixed leg is its own hazard.
Forgot to mention, I am a big fan of electronic storage of measurements that come with digital levels and prefer to focus my energies on something other than writing down numbers.?ÿ
I kind of shift from total station all the way to digital level for most things, if I were to use an optical level it would probably be some conditions or task based criteria.
Along the same somewhat anal theme as fixing the legs I would be interested to hear how people handle temperature effects on asphalt. Not only for levels but for all tripod work. I have used wood shims, snow to burry the feet, white paint to deflect the sun (that did not really work), sandbags to secure the feet and shade the asphalt (that worked but was for gps, would be really heavy for levels), one thing I have not tried but have daydreamed about is running spikes into the asphault, like gin spikes or something and then setting up over them.
Who uses an umbrella for levels? Anyone? I think the manuals for the dna may encourage it for tight work and adjusting...
?ÿ
I have a DNA03,?ÿ a Nedo fixed-leg tripod and a 2-meter invar rod.?ÿ I haven't used this equipment since 2016, and it hasn't been calibrated as a system since 2011 at SLAC.?ÿ I'm thinking about selling it.?ÿ Shipping would be significant for the rod and tripod due to size and weight, but doable.?ÿ
If anyone sees this and is interested I'll dig it all out and post photos.
Why sell it. I've never sold any equipment. I have older stuff even an older tx5 laser scanner which i occasionally still use. You can get minor $$ for it but bought it for big $$$.
I always wanted to buy a fixed leg tripod but for some reason never did.
Why sell it.
Projects that need this kind of equipment are few and far between for a small outfit like mine, and geodetic leveling isn't the kind of work I can realistically take on anymore now that I no longer have employees.?ÿ ?ÿRather than continue to have it taking up space and losing value, I'm inclined to convert it to dollars.
have it taking up space
?ÿ ?ÿThat is the issue. Junk and all the rest has a real cost.
?ÿ
They have a special place that stores all the stuff we probably won't need for a long time, if ever...they call it "the store".
?ÿ
Now...that attitude of mine is changing as COVID makes finding things more and more difficult.
@jim-frame I might be interested for sure. What state are ya in. ?ÿI might make a trip. When I was in the service we built some boxes water tight and soft cushion on inside made some adapters to the box so they could easily attach to the humvee tarp frames. They can warp very easily if just laid down and such. ?ÿ

Davis, California (95616).?ÿ Let me know if interested.
Thanks!
@jim-frame interested but I want be driving ????. ?ÿShipping. Yes get me photos and pricing. ?ÿMy boss is very interested. ?ÿJust comes down to numbers for him. ?ÿ
@jim-frame thank you. As soon as i wrap up this ALTA and can get to a computer I will get all of this looked at. ?ÿGo over with boss. ?ÿThey have not done much work in the past for this type of equipment so they just rented. ?ÿSince I started working part time for them they have been interested in going after more work in the realm. ?ÿ
