Not sure the spacing, I did a lot of surveys on rails. All work was for MTA Subway system in NYC. I posted an example of the drawing I did, also I created 3d poly lines. Used the 3d polylines to create a profile. All my shot were taken on the TOP FIELD SIDE. The inside of gauge is typically worn, I use to use a wooden template that I would sit on top of the rails and then survey the center of the template. Good luck.
