RTK can be used under most conditions, you just have to know how to use it wisely.
There are several ways RTK can be used in dense forest.
Recon-usually can get a position close enough to search for and recover monuments, also flag an approximate property line to get a clearer picture of the direction you need to traverse.
When staking points, a flag can be set at the approximate location which will assist you on picking traverse points that have the best view of the stake location.
Set control- set points in open areas near monuments or control needed which otherwise would require substantial traversing.
One thing I found very useful is immediately having a bearing to work with.

Will it run with TDS, Carlson, or any other?

I have used the CHC X90 for a few years now. The thing is a work horse.
I recently purchased a CHC i80 setup with the Carlson2 DC and SurvCE software. It works great on NC VRS and SC VRS. I hate the dependency on cellular service and network admins of VRS. So I purchased another rover setup and base receiver. The three i80 receivers and two Carlson DCs with software cost me less than one Trimble R10 rover setup. My DCs both run GPS and TS software so I can connect either to the TS. That is definitely something I would check into if I were you. You do not want to have one DC for your TS and one for your Rover.
In combination with the X90, I now have the flexibility to run up to four static sessions at once. Or, two static sessions and a RTK base and rover. Or three VRS rovers and one static....you get the picture. I am impressed with the results in open areas but blown away with results along tree lines and in minimal canopy.
You don't need the 2 rover setup that I have. That's just my preference given the typical work I do.

If you have a local equipment dealer, get them to meet you on one of your wooded projects for a demonstration.
