My area is going through a Flood Map change, proposed to go into effect August 2014. The preliminary maps are public information and available online. That being said, we are getting multiple calls from builders to tell them what the proposed Base Flood Elevation is going to be. Obviously, this takes time, to map out where the property is, and where it is on the preliminary maps. At what point do you stop giving it away? It's public information, you can look it up yourself, or pay us to do it.

You stop giving away information the minute they start asking for your expert knowledge.

Good answer.

Surveyors generally are too nice with giving away their work. I count myself guilty as well.

I would say if you can't help yourself from giving away information sometimes, you should at least stop giving it away before you feel the need to ask when to stop giving it away. By the time you get to asking the question, you already feel taken advantage of!

I guess it depends. If the builders are regular clients of yours and you expect to get some work out of providing them with information for their design purposes, then I'd probably give it away upfront, and build it into the cost of the first survey for the site. Our new FEMA maps are either overlaid over a GIS parcel map, or an Aerial, And available through a website to look up by address, so it only takes about 2 minutes to get the answer. Sounds like your situation is different, as far the time it takes to locate the BFE.
