Which states REQUIRE remonumentation of GLO stones with "modern" ferrous monuments?

I just finished listening to a recent mtg of our BOR which was discussing a rule requiring adherance to BLM remonumentation practices..... I'm personally not a big fan of that Idea...

Hub..

I disagree, if I'm reading the OP as it was meant: remonumenting existing PLSS stones.

An original monument is exactly that. Now if we find that a corner has been perpetutated or reset and there is no filed corner record:

Section 3-121. Reconstruction or rehabilitation of monument corners

In every case where a corner record of a public land survey corner is required to be filed or recorded under the provisions of this act, the surveyor shall reconstruct or rehabilitate the monument of such corner, and accessories to such corners so that it will be as permanent a monument as is reasonably possible to provide and so that it may be located with facility at any time in the future.

I don't believe this applies to existing original monuments. Gawd if it does...I'm busted..:-X

Paden...

This is where I was;

245:15-13-2. Minimum Standards

"Where practical, monuments shall be constructed of material capable of being detected with the conventional instruments for finding ferrous or magnetic objects. All set monuments shall have affixed thereto a durable marker or cap bearing, at a minimum, the license number of the land surveyor in responsible charge, or the Certificate of Authorization number of the firm performing the survey."

I think it is a good idea. The general public usually will respect a metal survey monument as something important(utility companies excluded), but they don't usually understand the importance of a single stone or mound of rock. Which explains finding them hanging as weights in barbed wire fences.

Doesn't your agency require remonumentation?

It's at our discretion- depending on the condition of the original corner.

Mandatory remonumentation is a slap in the face of a professional. Discretion is our valor! In my home state the rules and regs. are:

Section 5. Rehabilitation of Original Public Land Survey System Monuments.
(a.) Original corner monuments and accessories recovered in place as described in the original record and deemed to be in good condition may be left in place.

Rankin and BLM monuments

a rule requiring adherance to BLM remonumentation practices

I'm not sure what that means. What the BLM sets that I see are monuments that cost about $80 per. That doesn't include the magnet thingy they place under the pipe.

Also, you get to dig the hole down about 30" which is problematic this time of year and for the next three months.

I was out Friday the 21st locating 10 original stones. They were frozen solid in the ground (I estimated about a foot of frost) and will be until probably March maybe April. Anyway, to replace these nice marked stones with 36"x2-1/2" diameter stainless steel pipes topped with a 3" brass cap would have taken a whole day itself and all the stones would now be broken into pieces, chipping them out of the ground. I just can't see the logic to that. Particularly since the stones are set, marked and have been in the ground for over 100 years.

Just for this project you are talking about close to $900 of materials and probably another grand for labor-above the cost that you already have in the job. And you destroyed all the stones in the process.

I certainly agree that stones in poor condition should be rehabilitated, but requiring BLM monuments for everything is over the top.

Rankin and BLM monuments

How dare you interject common sense and logic into an argument that has been started and advanced (for the most part) by engineers and others in the power structures within our "professional" organizations and licensing boards that haven't had the unnecessary burden of actually applying said common sense and logic in many years (if ever). For after all, being a professional has absolutely nothing to do with using your experience and knowledge in solving problems, especially when the "powers that be" can create rules that will apply to every possible scenerio encountered.
