I need to get hold of a simple cogo program (non cad) to run closure loops for a Parcel Map I am going to be submitting for check. Is there such an animal available? I have an old Simplicity Cogo program and it does do what I need to do but it will not print, and that's the problem.

Simple, Use Your Existing CoGo

What is required is an independant check of your map. Open a new blank drawing and input only the information found on your plot of survey. Get your closure, area and find any errors. While it is nice to use a different software as in the past almost any software now requires an extensive learning curve. I do this regularly and ouput a point plot, with lines bearings and distances. The check.dwg, check.crd and ascii.asc file get saved on the project disc, project CD and backup hard drive.

Paul,

You wrote “I have an old Simplicity Cogo program and it does do what I need to do but it will not print, and that's the problem.”

I still use Simplicity 4.0, then import the coordinates into ACLDD2006.

I have no problems printing the data, maybe you should reload the Simplicity program and check your printer settings.

Have a great weekend!

Note to Wendell, thank you for that link Y'all have a great weekend too. 🙂

Paul,
If you are using Simplicity Survey 4.0, you can go under the program configuration settings and set your Output Device to Display and File. The program will then create a file "jobname.doc". Despite the .doc file extension, it is a plain ASCII text file you can load into Word or Notepad, or whatever, and print from there. If you are using "Sight" Survey 3 under a Windows version that will not properly print (Vista or 7), simply use your mouse to select all the text from the text output window and paste it into a spreadsheet such as Excel, then print from there.

Plain Jane Cogo Program for Win XP - Mark

> Paul,
> If you are using Simplicity Survey 4.0,

Unfortunately it's 3.03, same one I bought from you around 1989 or so :):hi5:

and I have NO idea on where the manual is, but I do not think that would help much. Everything works fine except when I try and toggle 'printer on' I get an error message.

I think I am going to have to use General Cadds built in cogo program. Rather not cause it's just so unfinished but to generate a few pages of closures I'll suffer through it.

Microsoft Excel can do COGO pretty quick. Doesn't take much to set up a spreadsheet to generate the lat and departs. Even curve data and the final closure percent.
Heck, I could have used a calculator and sin, cosine and tangent and had it done by the time this thread took place.
Although it reminds me the time I submitted hand calculated closures for a parcel map in a N CA city and the city surveyor kicked them back because they weren't a computer printout like ACAD. Instead of fighting it, I just typed them up and made them look like ACAD. Same exact info, just looked like computer generated.
I could have argued it with him, but it isn't kosher to fight an unarmed opponent.

I agree totally.

I've used Excel to generate closure calcs from time to time just to be contrary I guess or because I wanted what I wanted and not what some pre-packaged software wanted to give me. It's a little more efficient than old school use of a traverse form.

I use it quite a bit for different things. Though not for everybody as a person needs to know how to set up formula and what sin and tan mean.
By the way, been dealing with some CDF folks regarding planned work in N. CA. Some new bridges and a fire station. Prelim stages. Maybe something you have your boots in someday.

It's possible depending on who the work gets assigned to in our office. We have a lot of bridges and forest fire stations not to mention HQ facilities and mountain top repeater sites.

Paul:

I use 4.0 (the Windows 98 Version) in my Windows XP computer and everything prints out the same as it did under DOS.

Plain Jane Cogo Program for Win XP - Wendell

I use Copan pretty regularly (to check the calc's of the short traverse loops the students do in their Surveying 1 class) and I've never had it crash on me at all.

The interface is dated, but I don't find it difficult to use, although it did take me 15 minutes or so to learn how to handle the data entry.

I use Copan fairly regularly...I can check a short traverse loop with it much faster than I can with the HP, and WAY faster than Carlson can even load up and create a job.

Paul

I have Copan installed on all my map checkers PC's at the County. We have not had any problems. Have you downloaded the latest version? May have been some bugs in earlier releases.

Plain Jane Cogo Program for Win XP -- Copan

Do you mind telling me ([email protected]) where and when it crashes, Paul?

We've heard recently that Copan crashes for a few users, in places where it is working just fine for other users, and are currently working on finding the causes. (It's difficult because i cannot reproduce the crashes myself, so the more info i get from users the better.)

Cheers.
