I've been looking for work, and what I keep getting hit with is, "Do you do pipelines?". Is there something special about pipeline surveying? I have done some earlier in my career. Seems to me this is what pipeline surveying is about.

Traverse the route.
Profile the center line.
Cross section the route.
Survey boundary ties.
Stake right of way.
Stake center line of pipe.

Am I missing something? Is there something new to pipeline surveying?

I would guess that there is going to be a lot of pipeline surveying with the proposed pipeline running from Canada to Texas?

Maybe that is the biggest project going now?

Oh right! AS-BUILT!

And Right Of Way Parcels!

Kind of makes me wonder when I get asked that question?

Ok! I now know what to respond!

Thanks!

Cross out about half of the things in your list. Most of the elevation data is picked off of Lidar mapping and aerial maps. Field verify some of the topo. It's not rocket science.

I think what they are asking is will you travel and live out of a hotel.

Beside the Key pipeline, the next biggest is DCM from the corner of
NM to east of Houston, Texas. A resounding "Watch out!!!!" came after
a Texas surveying contractor got screwed out of 1/2 million bucks of fees.
A friend from Frankfort said he got paid but abruptly laid off.

Don't you think that what they are really saying is that in addition to the out-of-town work, they really don't want to train people to do what is necessary? Just because you can run a total station or GPS does not mean you can get the job done efficiently and right. If you have worked around much, you will know what I am talking about. We had one guy get lost on the project and we did not find him until the next morning! Good thing we brought him an extra lunch because he was hungry, but we would not let him leave the truck that day (his last day). We had another guy get lost and we found him back at the motel because he did not know how to get back to the job! We had a party chief get in an argument with the helicopter pilot about where he was supposed to get dropped off to start his days work! Of course the helicopter pilot was right.

I think they want someone who can get the job done in both the rural and urban environment. Someone who doesn't get bogged down with all the surveying that does not have to be done for the pipeline. It is not a science it is just experience that makes the difference. Oh yeah we had a party chief who said he had experience on Fiber Optic and came back at the end of the day with half a mile complete when everyong else was doing a mile each day. He was proud of his product, but the boss was not happy with him!

I don't think you can fake it when they say they want experience.

Not different than what you think, however, are you thinking of being a chief or surveyor. Each PL company wants the parcel plats in different manners, exhibits, etc. Takes some time of getting used to.

Stations are a thing of the past for most unless they're big gathering lines.

As usual, it depends.

Gone are the days of slope chaining for determining length of pipe, and 200' stations.

Each one is different and dependent on the contractor doing the building.
