My wife has been researching her ancestors and ran across a great-great-great uncle that worked on the original government surveys in Ohio.?ÿ He was killed by a falling tree.?ÿ I was going to find some more information for her, but can not remember the name of the Surveyor.?ÿ I think the name was something like Barkley.?ÿ The relative's name was Daniel Wing.?ÿ Has anyone have any information that could lead me to the field notes??ÿ Thanks.

The only surveyor listed on the BLM site in PLSS similar is Levi Barber. Could have been a surveyor in the Military Surveys or a surveyor for one of the private land companies. I'll look in one of my reference books when I get home.

I found the article in The American Surveyor, it was on Captain Riley.?ÿ The relative worked for Riley stocking the forts, but left to survey when Riley returned to the sea.?ÿ According to the article the Deputy Surveyor was Benjamin Hough and was surveying across the Maumee River and that is when the relative was killed.?ÿ I also had the name of the relative wrong as he went by Henry Wing.?ÿ The Captain Riley article is in the February 2017 issue.

Thanks for looking.

Any relation to Vincent Wing??ÿ He is mentioned as active in the 1600's and a style of chain is named for him.?ÿ It had 40 links per 33 ft half-chain instead of Gunter's 50, and was used mostly in Pennsylvania.

?ÿ
