I survey for myself on the weekends and evenings. I don't survey every weekend and evening because I love my kids and family, so it's not feasible to purchase new GPS equipment. If I had an older GPS that I could set up on an assumed point and run a base/rover setup using GPS bearings to help increase production, it could really help me a lot to be more productive. I'm also open to Glonass capability. My question is, would a dual Trimble 5800 setup allow me to set up on an assumed point (10000, 10000) and run good GPS bearing from there? How is the signal in light canopy with this setup? Are they generally pretty reliable? Also, an R6 unit is more money, but has Glonass capability. In Mississippi, we have a statewide network that is free that does pretty well. I haven't used Trimble much, but can you get the data out of a TS2 or TS3 data collector via usb without using Penmap or a subscription based app? Thank you, just weighing options.
I would recommend the R6 over the 5800.
5800 are good units, but you will not get very far under canopy, you also will have to hook up a radio to the base to make the connection to the rover. I used mine for years with a 4700 base and various radios.?ÿ
But I work in the big open plains areas. I think you will be frustrated in Mississippi.?ÿ
Definitely avoid the 5800 for base/rover work if you are anywhere near multipath/canopy conditions.
You really need GLONASS for that, so my vote would also be for the R6.
Do you need a paid subscription to PenMap to get the data out of the TS2 Data Collector? Or can you get it via usb?
Are you talking about the Trimble TSC2? Those controllers ran Survey Controller software, which allowed you to export data to the USB.
Penmap is a newer field software, it can run on your phone, but like any other software you'll need to purchase through a dealer.
You might be able to find an old TSC2 with Controller on it, though.

Yes, a couple of setups I have seen come with either a TSC2 or TSC3 data collector. I have civil 3D and Carlson Takeoff on my laptop. I assume I should be able to get data from the collector to my laptop without any special software other than what I have?
We used a USB stick when we ran SurvCE on a TSC2.?ÿ "Geek whistles" seem to work with any of the data collectors of the past 15 or 20 years.?ÿ Sometimes you need a USB adapter (ie. we had a Getac that only had a mini port; we used a cable to adapt it to a standard slot and plugged the USB into that).
