:good:
Charge a reasonable cost for your time and effort. "Reasonable" will vary per occurrence, based on a lot of things, of course.
A little off topic - but it kind of reminds of the calls that I still get today about a survey that I did years ago. I gave the client a progress print, and then never heard from him again. He used that along with some scaled distances to convey lots. He copied a portion of the plan to insert into the deeds, but made sure to reference the plan by me. So, I get calls for a copy of the plan, as the deed print doesn't show all the lines - but I never created them or even made a final plan. Awesome.
My opinion, give out information for free the first time, along with an invoice of how much you would expect to get and the fee waived "this time". If they start coming back for more or for 'cleaner' copies, make it clear that they will be charged. If you know what it's for, it wouldn't hurt to advise them that they would be better off getting a survey if that is the case.
I would give out information to another surveyor without charge.

You should have filed a lawsuit against him. You'd have good argument that what he did tarnished your professional reputation. Of course, you might not win anything from him.
"This cannot be a serious post."
Unfortunately, it probably is... This is a typical comment by a "measurement expert."
I agree that had to be satire.
😛 Dan I need a copy of a 40 acre survey sec. 28 T 7 S R 8 E Tangipahoa Parish just above the Joyce Managment Area by 1pm.
Oh yeh . . .
And I need a copy of survey of property rented by a Mr. Smith back in about 1975.
I think it might be on Highway 35 about 5 or ten miles west(or east?), of Hooterville, but you can't miss it . . . just look for the survey map that shows 2 creeks going into a swamp.
My client tells me that the original map had a real nice north arrow on, so once you see it(the north arrow), you'll know it's the one.
By the way, see if the signed description is there too. This way my client won't have to pay for a survey, although you might have to kinda "upgrade", the map and description for the county.
My client says he's willing to pay you about $50 dollars and a pint of Maple Syrup.
Oh . . . sorry . . . he needs it before the taxmap department closes today.
$4,144...really?
I've got half-a-mind to put in his questions/answers window that "I'll give him a buck for it."
Did you get that job? I told WLC they should use you guys.

Those records are open to be viewed and copied by any Land Surveyor that knows that I have them, that is unless they have been an @&#^@ to me in the past.
Hello!!!!
We are in the Information Business......if you have information it is a commodity….similar to the inventory in Wal-Mart.....and they charge for that too don't they?????
