We just completed a boundary survey around Dillon Lake in Ohio. A portion of the boundary was adjoined by one side of the Ohio Canal. We found 10 or 11 original canal monuments (2" cast iron pipes with cast iron caps) along the boundary. The caps were illegible but hey, they were set in 1820.

How'd they fit the record dimensions? (More appropriately: how do the record dimensions fit the undisturbed monuments?)
They fit really well. The distances between the monuments checked within half a foot on all of them. Most were around 0.10' to 0.20'.
Looks good, except you all aren't using enough flagging 😀 Need to start reviewing your safety standards for flagging pins.
How did they sound? Did they buzz up loud? Looks like they may have been difficult to find, or were a few already witnessed with the orange fiberglass "bike flags"?
Do you really want me to put a pic up here of one you did while you were here? 😛
We had to look for them. We placed the carsonite posts there after we recovered them. They rang out pretty good on the ol' Schonstedt.
I wish you would. We could use it as an example of 'How to flag a Pin correctly so you can find it for the next five years, GUARANTEED!!'
Amazing! Do you know if there was supposed to be wording on the caps?
We're not sure if there was supposed to be wording on them or not. A couple of them looked like they may have said "Canal" on them but we couldn't tell for sure. They were just described as iron pin and cap.
I know this will send horror into some of the ranks, but I would tie one of those pins out, remove it, bead blast it, measure it, photograph it, coat it with primer/paint, reset it, and post the photos on SurveyorConnect.

We will call that "doing the Penry" on it from now on. You are a monument rehabilitation machine....

“I would tie one of those pins out, remove it…..”
Personally I wouldn’t mess with it lest the “Survey Gods” implement revenge by means of some nasty bodily parasite invasion, i.e.: ticks, chiggers or worse “Saber tooth crotch crickets” (that’s body crabs to y’all northerners).;-)
The easiest way to accomplish what you have suggested would be to have C. Tompkins (above) flag the thing up and wait for some sort of construction equipment to come along and “remove” it for you.
Y’all have a great week!
PS to J. Penry Great book, very informative. :good: Write another one.

Thank You!!
Here’s a pic of me, SWMBO, and one of the grandkids. Don’t know which one they all look the same to me.
This is me inspecting a ¼ corner that I determined to be misplaced by some other surveyor by 683.78994152 feet.
My apologies to David for the hijack, I never hesitate to show off my family.:-D
Y’all have a great week/weekend!
