Arrived at a construction site this morning to locate utilities that were uncovered in a trench. No one was in the trench or nearby. I set the robot up near the trench and went to get the backsight. When I got back to the robot, two young guys were in the trench sawing a steel pipe. Of course they were showering the robot with sparks and debris. I yelled and told them there was a lot of money on that tripod. One of them commented "Well I guess you better move it then". A few years ago I probably would have thrown my hammer at them. I guess I've mellowed as I've gotten older. The location work was to the benefit of their company. I would guess they won't be doing that again after the job super got through with them. Luckily the robot was unhurt.

Me. "What's the difference?"
T.C. Carroll "It's the difference between right and wrong!"

You meet all kinds of guys on construction jobs I have had operators turn off the vibrator on their roller without me asking when they saw me setting up, and other folks have been aware of my equipment and been careful. Of course there was the guy who hit my tripod leg with a jeep while I was looking through the scope and then laughed about it, he did stop long enough to see what happened, I caught the instrument. You have to watch your gear and your rear on construction jobs.

I try to make the robot the last piece of equipment to go up in my work preparations. Sometimes this approach results in more walking but that is a price I am willing to pay.

I do hate when people feel that their work is by default the most important and that the best way to impress their own importance is to be rude and overbearing.

Showering equipment with sparks is a tough one but...

I've found over the years, getting along with everyone on the jobsite from traffic sign techs and shovel operators "up" to the project engineers and inspectors plays to our favor. Stroking an ego or two usually pays back ten fold. That guy down in the hole can be the most important guy on the job...

[sarcasm]Do I understand that you said that you got this. OK, sign this work order and I will be on my way or you can get out of that hole and let me do my job.[/sarcasm]
