Was driving along my primary arterial to the Denver airport and saw the contractors for a Powerline pole line installation project hard at work.?ÿ The tripod with legs extended across this guy shoulder drew my attention as he bounded down the embankment.?ÿ I noticed a Trimble S8 mounted on the platform of said tripod.?ÿ I wanted to stop to take a photo, for the comedic value, and the " Don't ever do this or your ass is fired" file.?ÿ Sometimes I?ÿ wonder who is training these idiots............?ÿ
Ditto.........I've let a few IMen go for that very reason.
Have mentioned this to local surveyors and they look at me like I am crazed.
They don't have much to say when I prove how bad it is by letting them know why they have to send their units in for repair and recalibration so often and to replace instruments they say that were worn out in a couple of years and the instruments their guys keep saying are not worth having because they don't last very long and showing them the parts that take the most abuse are the most sensitive parts of the TS and accessories that were not designed for the stress involved in carrying while attached to a tripod.
Still have every TS I've purchased since 1992 and they are all in perfect working order and they all have been treated like my grandfather's railroad watch from the late 1800s.

They probably charge so much more per hour than surveyors that its cheaper for them to buy a new S8 every six months than spend the time training, firing, and retraining people to take care of the equipment.

Where's the dislike button? Sad but true...

Go remove that total station from his hands and say, "I'm from TSPS (total station protective services), I'm taking this total station into protective custody and charging you with total station endangerment and neglect, it will be placed into foster care for total stations."
I wouldn't carry a robot like that, but it's been our standard procedure for decades to carry the instrument on the tripod over the shoulder.
All our instruments are regularly calibrated and we've never had a problem with broken tribrachs.?ÿ Until a couple of years ago we were still using instruments that were 30 years old.?ÿ We don't use them any more because Topcon and Sokkia quit making parts to fix them.
Here's a little ditty for those that want to pass judgement on us.
A crewmate of mine was involved in a helicopter (Bell 47) low altitude engine failure autorotation hard landing which injured his spine.?ÿ The T-2 in its bullet case he was holding in his lap was unharmed and still in calibration.?ÿ The helicopter's skids were severely damaged but it was salvageable and back in the air six months later.?ÿ
