"I found the stone in a campfire ring about 40 feet from the corner position they established"
Yeah...I've found THE STONE in a nearby campfire ring more times than I want to count. I have also seen situations where the MOUND of Stone around a Wood Post Corner has been MOVED over to some camp site, and used to build a campfire ring (one can only wonder what happened to the Wood Post) :-@
Oh yeah...and a couple of feet of Bearing Tree (the scribed part), on a guys mantle in his Cabin once too. At least he could take me to the right stump!

"most of the bearing trees were ponderosa and the remains of those now are rotten mounds that can barely be identified as to species.."
I have found that if you scratch and carefully sift through those rotten pine tree mounds, you can sometimes find a slab of pitch that covered the scribing that has long since rotted away (if there hasn't been a fire in the area). The mirror impression of the scribing can sometimes be viewed on the pitch slab.
Of course I'm sure you already know that, but it's interesting none the less.
Found the NE BT to the NW corner of 5 today. Pictures later. Snoopy dance time now, plus I have to get back to town in time to get the kid from daycare....

I guess geology was invented after the pyramids were built... so you're excused....
here are the pics of the NE BT......here's the bottom "BT" (sideways from the right)
Here's the top- hopefully it comes in orients correctly... the should be the to of "32"....
The location for the stone that was moved -+/- 2 feet- has a hole about the right size.
the location for the NW BT is near a stumophole and a shatter old fir stump.
corner based on the BT to the Brass capp set by double proportion is....

haven't finished looking for the SW and SE.- Like I said - I had to pop smoke early to get to town to pick up my son from daycare.
Now if you'll 'scuse me whilst I dance.... bop bop bop bop bopbopbop I'm alllll- right- no need to worry 'bout me....
I would pretend to be SURPISED that "someone" (presumably a "surveyor") would miss that Bearing Tree (and the other physical evidence that you describe), But I'm NOT!
Few years go by without seeing AT LEAST ONE "single/double proportioned, grant boundary'd, least-squared, mathimagically BS'ed MONUMENT from which OBVIOUS (and man I mean OBVIOUS) Original physical evidence of the ORIGNAL Corner Position/Monument or accessories thereof, stand out like a sheep turd in a bowl of milk!
Man I hate that kind of stuff!
