@jimcox?ÿ

Okay then I don't know why it went off. It was packed away in the case from the day I used it with a properly working e bubble to the day I pulled it back out, several days or maybe a week later.?ÿ

@350rocketmike?ÿ

I say this as a longtime user and aficionado of Trimble gear...I don't use the tilt function or eBubble with anything other than the R12i.

The magnetometer in the R10 and R12 is just rudimentary by comparison. Magnetometers were OK when they were the industry standard, but now it's been totally outclassed by IMUs.

But turning off the IMU in an R12i is like fighting with one hand behind your back...after you paid the referee to use two hands rather than one.

@rover83?ÿ

If I get upgraded to an r12i eventually I will definitely try it out. I may even get the chance to borrow someone elses and try it out at some point.?ÿ

@rover83 It has made me a believer. I honestly thought it was just some marketing junk and did not have a place in reality in every day Surveying. But i forced myself to use it and test it and it didnƒ??t take long to realize that it was a game changer. I would have had to feed the gerbils some high end feed to get my brain to understand just how valuable it has made rtk work. Staking and topo or mapping. 6 ft privacy wood fence no problem. Power poles no problem. Need to shoot a manhole on other side of fence no problem just reach and place the tip and you are done. I believe we are entering a time when rtk will be the first tool grabbed instead of the robot. With all the gnss constellations now and how well and repeatable results. Plus imu is like icing and the cake with two scoops of ice cream. Of course trees canopy is a deterrent but i see that slowly diminishing as more L5 and satellites get launched and as manufacturers experiment more and more with all the data and figure out all the timing issues from different countries. And more software driven vs hardware on satellite tracking.?ÿ

Who else has imu besides Trimble. Does carlson and leica and javad have that. I bet they all probably have it. Rover How is rtk where you are located. Can you use it 50% 30% 90% of the time.?ÿ

I do miss my super hot and crafty 12i GPS units.?ÿ you can even shoot the base for a check. pretty spiffy.

@350rocketmike?ÿ

if they're saying they're losing the imu calibration, tell them to stop dropping it or smashing it into things. That causes the imu to drift and induces imu bias.?ÿ Still need operators that treat the gear with respect.

eventually it will need to be repaired if the bounce them around enough....

I'm using the GS18 FROM Leica now, and it's ok.?ÿ I think Trimble won that?ÿ battle.?ÿ My total station though tracks appropriately better for what it's worth.

@jitterboogie?ÿ

Which Leica were you using? I'm not finding the extreme difference that others claim. I mean it's good, until you lose lock more than 2 seconds then the old Leica wins that battle cause it can predict for 5 seconds and still regain lock. It is slightly better at close range but I walk very gentle that close and rarely lose lock with either one.?ÿ

@350rocketmike?ÿ

I think I'm using a TCRS1203???

I'll look at it today.?ÿ I'm impressed with the long distance lock and the prediction for lock.

esp with the passive prism

up close is horrendous but I'm also doing stupid stuff like setting up in my own way for topo etc... ?????ÿ

Rover How is rtk where you are located. Can you use it 50% 30% 90% of the time.?ÿ

Most of our operations are in the Pacific Northwest (I'm in the Tacoma area myself) so we're no stranger to tree canopy.

But we do operate in eastern WA, also ID, CO, CA, lots of open and flat areas.

I'd say in most "tree canopy" areas we can and do use RTK about 50% of the time. It's really variable though, since base-rover is still generally more reliable and repeatable, and our SOP is to use the RTN in WA.

We also have a significant chunk of PMs who don't always keep up with the latest & greatest, so they will often exert control and force crews to go straight to terrestrial rather than attempt RTK. So it's hard to know whether we *could* have done OK with RTK, because we didn't even try.

Hazards of working at a larger firm I guess. It's ironic to me, since smaller outfits are often better at understanding, streamlining and making full use of tech - but they often don't want to (or can't) pay for the top notch gear.

?ÿ

Maybe that will change. Dimensions is about to kick off here in an hour or two, I'm about to walk down to the exhibition hall and see if maybe they'll unveil something even better than the R12i...

@rover83 nice. I have not been to dimension in years. Last time was 2006-2008 years. I taught one year. I am actually wearing my fleece from 2006 today lol yea if we donƒ??t take the time to try then we will never know. I love to push it to find the breaking poiyso I know. ?ÿHave fun at dimensions. Keep is posted on new things for sure. I am about to order two crews worth of equipment so anything new would be nice to know.

@jitterboogie?ÿ

I'm using one of them today (r12i), that party chief is sick and I'm on a job where I needed a base. This one has clearly not been dropped, still looks like new. I asked him about the IMU yesterday and he said they just found it a real pain to set up so they turned it off after the first week. Just having a quick lunch right now, so I'm likely not going to have time to set up and try out the IMU, no need for it today anyway. I did run hybrid with the base/rover and s5 and it all worked good after I figured out you have to use "start base receiver" instead of "measure points" to get the base to connect.?ÿ

@350rocketmike?ÿ

the setup takes a few minutes, it's easier if you have some sandbags or snow.?ÿ you basically run the routine and it's like cradling a baby and turn and hold and turn and hold etc.

maybe they need to lay off the brown bottles before they calibrate.

kidding!

?ÿ

have fun it's great technology and works well.

Believe it or not the guy I'm talking about is the most steady guy I've ever seen with a pole. He doesn't need a bipod with the robot.?ÿ

@350rocketmike?ÿ

maybe it's the fear of being replaced by the bleeding edge?

????

?ÿ

he's probably too stable.?ÿ IMUs need motion to work.

lol.

I'm using the TCRP1203. Solid even if it isn't brand new and bleeding edge.

it tracks well.

@jitterboogie - Don't have an r12i but can appreciate the clever check shot to the base - verifies rod heights are probably good and IMU is working properly - genius!

@said-lot?ÿ

I'm sure I'm not the first to do that, but I realized as I was getting up to speed that it would be a productive thing.

?ÿ

I've gotten pan/lip shots under cats nearly horizontal and they were good shots.

?ÿ

still best to learn with an 8min bubble though. ?????ÿ

@jitterboogie?ÿ

Maybe, not sure. You would think walking around would be enough to keep it going after initially setting it up.?ÿ

That's the previous gen Leica from the one I was using (TCRP1203+). I read somewhere that the plus is more like a ts12 than the original 1200 series. Low bright sun was the only thing that would sometimes give it trouble and I was told that was improved with the newer ts16.?ÿ

@350rocketmike?ÿ

I have experienced that low bright sun and then surrounding yourself with lots of orthogonal windows....was truly hell.
