Anybody know anything about this instrument? It looks like it is from the leica lineage. Possibly a Geomax OEM. On that same note, does anybody have any experience with the Geomax instruments and how they compare to Leicas? It looks like Hexagon is following the Trimble model; making these their version of the Focus (5600) and satisfying a lower price point.

The Leica 1200 series lives on.
It is a rebranded Geomax. I spoke with a dealer about it and was told it is the same as a Leica, just different color.
Technically the 1200+ was renamed the TS12. We just bought two, and all they changed was the hot keys on the keypad.
Thanks Guys,
That's what I thought.
Cheers,
Ralph

:good: My thoughts exactly CSS,I believe this is a good thing.

Why mess with success? The 1200, coupled with an Allegro running Carlson, was the total package. You have Leica accuracy, one of the best OS's for data collection made, and reflectorless capability.
I'm curious if they are going to combine it ala Smartstation with the Carlson rtk, while a bit longer to set up having VPN service with one of the best robots ever made would be win/win any way you slice it.

My suspicion is that, while it may be constructed from the same plans as the 1200, it's probably made on an assembly line somewhere in China rather than built by a craftsman in Heerbrugg.
The obvious catch being that China will build things to whatever quality level specified.
Yes this is a rebranded Leica TPS1200 that has limitations built-in for performance. I can never figure out why Leica wants to rebrand works-of-art like the TPS1200. Obviously they want to squeeze out money from a great design but why would any surveyor buy a piece of equipment branded by a software company that has no idea about hardware. Why not buy a new Leica instrument from a quality dealer that will support and service an instrument. Carlson has no staff to repair or probably even support the hardware.
You get what you pay for and I cannot understand why surveyors are willing to save a nickel up front for an instrument that will be the backbone of their fieldwork for years and years.

First of all Leica has no say in the matter, Last I checked the Parent company Hexagon owns both Leica and Geomax.

Interesting, so the Focus robots are inferior to the 5600's because they're a different color? I demoed the Faro Scanner a few months ago (about the time Trimble did what they did) and I found it to be a great piece of equipment. Trimble licenses it and now it's the TX-5. They simply put a different wrapper on it. Does it make it inferior?

As an Alumni of NJIT, I could have bought those instruments (tcrp 1200s) when new to the market at below cost, but I went Trimble instead. Now I'm starting to second guess myself.
Here's what Geomax has to say:
Ralph
Leica dealer said they wont work on them. so not sure were they go for repair.
I purchased the GeoMax Robot a few months ago with the Allegro DC running Carlson CE.
The instrument runs, looks, sounds, and acts like the 1200 that I ran for many years
at Deschutes County. I bought mine from Allen Precision who will handle the service on it. The Carlson SW seems to work quite well with the GeoMax.
BTW, Allen Precision was running a great package deal that included a Leica 360° prism and the option of 24 months of interest free financing.

I guess I'm the argumentative type.
Why would an established company like Carlson, OEM a total station and not have a servicing plan in place before any agreement?
By the tone of some of these posts it seems like if something goes wrong you're sheet out of luck, I highly doubt that's the case.
In fact I just found out from a dealer that Leica and Geomax are in the same building in Atlanta and all warranty/repair issues will be handled from there.
Ralph
Well, since GeoMax purchased Allen Precision, I am confident that any service that my GeoMax Zoom 80 requires will be handled by well trained Technicians at AP.

Ralph,
About the Faro scanner.... ask the salesman how you go about registering multiple scans and which software they offer. I already know that answer to that question and you should really find out if you are think about using that gear.
I am not sure where the "inferior" rant came from in your post. The GeoMax is limited in areas like available angular accuracies and distance measuring capabilities as compared to the TPS1200.
Ralph,
Also... if you get a chance to see John White if you are still working in New Jersey... Tell him "Hello". John White is a great Leica rep and makes the difference for success after the sale for his customers.
I should have said that Hexagon purchased Allen Precision.

I will, John is a stand up guy. Leica provided most of the lab equipment at NJIT and the receiver for the CORS Station there.
BTW I work in NYC, the only reason I went to Newark was because it was the only place that taught Higher Surveying.

Ok
