We've got a crew flying down for some scanning work next month.
They're bringing the scanner, laptop, etc.etc., but we'd like to pick up some tripods and other odds and ends while we're down they, instead of lugging it all on the plane.
I've done a search, and have a couple of likely candidates, but I'd like to hear an opinion (or three or four) about where to pick up some equipment in the N.O. area.
Thanks in advance.
😉
I have delt with Haag and Tremble and Gulf Instruments. G I will probably have a little larger selection but both have treated me well.
I'm not volunteering on behalf of any N.O. surveyors but I'll bet there are some surveyors down there with closets full of stuff you need that wouldn't mind getting a small rental fee for it if you just need it for a short time.
I was surveying on an out-of-town job once when my GTS3B got soaked and wouldn't even turn on the next day. It was hundreds of miles to the nearest equipment dealer so I called around to local surveyors and one of them loaned me his 3B for free. My 3B finally snapped out of it when it dried out.
Thanks, Steve.
As Jim Fleming so quickly pointed out above 😉 , we will be "carpetbaggers", so I am not really looking to impose upon anyone from the area.
The expenses will be minimal and paid for by the client, so I'm thinking we'll get by. (We were actually going to buy them up here and have them shipped directly to the client's HQ....)
I had found both of Lamon's suggestions on the web.......just looking for confirmation/feedback.
I'm putting in my order for several food items to be brought back.
With the many, many, quality surveying firms in the New Orleans area, why would someone pay you to go there?
They figure it will be worth his fees in entertainment alone to hear him talk.
Nah Tommy, I think New Orleans is the only place in the South where it is acceptible to be rude.;-)
Haag & Trammel as well as Gulf Instruments are in Metarie, the suburb you will travel through (from the airport) before you get into Orleans Parish. Both are reputable, honest dealers and indeed rent equipment. At Haag & Trammel, ask for Nathan or Gabe (be sure to flirt with Norma). At Gulf Instruments, ask for Roland. I have done business with both firms for several decades.
Watch out for gators in the road ditches. If you pull over for some reason, be sure to count your feet before returning to the vehicle. No sense getting all that blood all over the place.
You mean Ms Norma is still there! Wow! I got to meet Mr Haag. I remember looking at the mounted moose head. Memories! Way back in the 60's!
Both are 1st class outfits!

Years ago, one of my old bosses sent a crew of barely 20 something single young guys to New Orleans, from Chattanooga, why, I don't remember. Without thinking about it, or looking at a calendar, he sent them during Mardi Gras (Mardi Gras is not a noted holiday in Chattanooga). He had to go to New Orleans and bail them out of jail and bring them home.
I have always dealt with Haag and Trammell and very seldom with Gulf Instruments.
The people at H&T have known me since I was 18 and I am a high school friend of Nathan Simeneaux's nephew.
Mr. Trammell's daughter in law is a midwife and delivered both of our daughters, she was also the reason we live in the place that we do.
Ms. Norma is a gem, but she only works part time now.
I did the survey on their office property a little more then ten years ago, they are good people.
Ha!
"Laissez les bons temps rouler"
:bad:
Are you at liberty to give any details on what you are scanning?
If it were Mardi Gras week we would already know what they were planning to "scan". Wouldn' tit be obvious.
Yeah but. The 100k for a scanner would go a looooooooooooooooooong way in an establishment that caters to those =)
We are building a B.A.P.S (bigazz pump station) there and I heard it mentioned in a meeting a couple of weeks ago that there may be the need for some scanning on it.
Mr. Cow
Wouldn' tit be obvious.
A Freudian slip? 😉
Mr. Cow
Not hardly.
Many years ago when things were more formal. A very shy fellow went to a town dance for the first time in his life. His shyness was built around the fact he had a wooden eye replacing one that had been too damaged to save. He was afraid to ask any of the girls to dance until he saw one who no one was asking. Then he noticed that she had a harelip. He approached her in a very gentlemanly fashion and politely asked her if she would like to dance. "Oh, wouldn't I?", she replied. He was furious immediately because of her pointing out his 'flaw'. He shouted, "harelip, harelip, harelip".
