For this interview, I decided to interview my dad. His is a L LS (Licensed Land Surveyor). This job was in the career cluster of engineering and architecture. He is the owner of SeGuin Land Surveying PLLC (Professional Limited Liability Corporation). He works in his own office. His office is located in a separated room in our basement. To my dad this is the easiest part of his job. Other than working in his office, he works all over New York State and even sometimes in other states. His favorite part of his job is having a mix of working in the outdoors and working in an office. His least favorite part of his job is working in bad weather. This also can make working harder if the weather is too bad. The hardest part about his job, is trying to stay on schedule with the volume of jobs he gets. He means trying to keep up with getting so many jobs to do in such a short amount of time. In this type of job, making a mistake is very easy to do. He has made a few mistakes when it comes to measuring or mapping a job. In my father’s career mostly all you use are special tools. When working in the “field”, my father uses many expensive specialized instruments. For example, when working in the field, my father uses a robotic total station and a GPS. Also, when he is working in the office, he uses specialized computer programs. For this job you need a lot of training. You must have a minimum of 8 years of experience prior to taking the final exam, which you must pass. Once you pass this test you may become a Licensed Land Surveyor. When my dad was younger, he found out what he wanted to be by taking a school career test. In school his favorite subjects were math and history. For his job, you mostly use math and science. When he was younger he wanted to be an architect. Being a surveyor is in the same career cluster so he came close to becoming what he wanted to be as a kid. In my father’s free time (when he has it), he likes to be with his family, hunting, fishing, playing sports, and being in the outdoors. Looking at what he likes to do in his free time, you can see that his job involves being outdoors most of the time. When I grow up I want to have a job in this type of career cluster of maybe even carry on the family business.
