I've always liked the idea of describing any occupation or profession in the simplest, most basic terms to see what shows up as the core activity. In my view, the simplest definition of "Land Surveyor" is "someone who tells you something you didn't know about your land". Naturally, there has been some contention in favor of "someone who tells you which of your fences are your property lines", but that would not be generally applicable.

So this afternoon when I went out to meet a prospective client who had bought a tract of land I had originally surveyed when it was carved out of a 500 acre tract about 10 years ago, having also surveyed the 500 acres when it was severed from 1000 acres about 20 years ago, I was willing to go with the flow of the prospective client's interest about the property.

What was he interested in? Indian artifacts. We spent more time looking at the evidences of ancient occupation, than we did discussing the actual bit of surveying needed.

Most Basic Definition of Realtor

In that light, what would be the most basic description of a realtor. Would it be:"person who will bank a commission check when your property is sold, regardless"?

A pick-pocket that charges you a percentage of the total amount of money they helped steal from you.

Most Basic Definition of Engineer

So, what would be the most basic description of the work of an engineer?

Would it be: "Person who can solve most problem in ideal world that contractor never build in or surveyor never furnish map of"?

I'm sure this must have come up here previously but it is always good for a chuckle.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Surveyor

1.A god like person that is infinitely more cunning than an engineer but unlike engineers actually have devoloped the socal skills of an 'A' list celib.

2.A typical Surveyor uses all manner of cool robotic instruments, laser scanners, eletronic measuring devices, high end computer programs and a beat up old 4WD.

3. A Typical Surveyor is better than a 'mans best friend' makes females go weak at the knees and wet at the crotch just by being in their presence and still has time to go to the pub after work.

4. Famous Surveyors in history are GOD, McGuyver, Mr T, Chuck Norris, The Loch Ness Monster, Einstein, JFK, Malcom X, Snoopy, James Bond, all Ninjas, Mr Miyagi, Thomas Eddison, The Hoff.

5. The average surveyor is able to bring the real world into the office of the timid cartographer by all manner of observations and exact measurements and can easily take the rambling designs of a fat-arsed but exciteable engineer and put them into the real world (or not, if they are complete s**t).

6. The Surveyor is often the target for the jealousy of others due to feelings of inadequacy (usually in the pants). Due to this Surveyors will often work in teams, where each will watch the other's back like a highly trained quasi-military unit. In this case the term "Team Survey" can be applied.
The Surveyors surveyed that (whatever object you want) and made a 3D digital image of it. Thanks Survey!!

Well, yes, those are the *obvious* definitions of "land surveyor". :> I was reaching for that essence of the activity that lies beneath those parts you've listed, the most basic root of land surveying.

The POB mag came yesterday. I read the Lucas article..
Sometimes I wonder what brand of bourbon is the man drinking over in 'Bama.
I htoguht the article got off to a wayward start as far direction was concernedd but then he steered himself to offer some very salient points about the surveyor's role to the public..

Well, didn't I read that he learned about surveying from correspondence courses and law from some community college? If that isn't a recipe for some serious drinkin', I'm not sure what is.

A preacher, doctor & lawyer walk into a bar...

First of all let me say that I am not inferring anything by that bourbon comment.
The beginning paragraphs of his column about the professionalism of preachers, doctors and lawyers, I found to be a bit wayward as I stated.
I did not agree with the lawyer "saving life'", if you know what I mean.
But I did like that he simplified the surveyor's duty as the advocate and protector of the American Dream and for that reason every surveyor should raise their prices immediately . Unfortunately the discount low balling broker based survey crowd will rejoice with that turn of events.
But I can't wait to use the consumer protector of the American Dream soon on someone and gage their reaction.:-)

I don't read POB any more, but if Lucas is now writing pure satire, it might be worth a look. :>
