someone in my office was thinking about taking the Miss exam in 2011 and this is what I found out. Keep in mind is is two years old.

* The two-hour Mississippi PS examination is CLOSED BOOK. It consists of 100 multiple choice questions counting one point each; the minimum passing grade is 70 points out of 100 points. The examination subjects are as follows:

Subject % of exam
General Land Office/Bureau of Land Management 30%
Standards of practice 20%
State plane coordiantes 5%
Licensure Law 10%
General Knowledge 15%
Rules and Regulations 20%

SUGGESTED STUDY MATERIALS :

- Instructions for Surveying in the State of Mississippi and The Survey of Mississippi’s State, Indian, and Township Boundaries (both available from the Miss. Association of Professional Surveyors – www.mississippisurveyor.com/books.htm

- Rules and Regulations of the Mississippi Board of Licensure and Mississippi Licensure Law (available on the Board’s web site: www.pepls.state.ms.us);

- Manual of Surveying Instructions, 1973 or 2009, Bureau of Land Management;

- Land Surveyor Reference Manual, A. Harbin;

- Senate Bill 2131, passed in 1992 by Mississippi legislature, can be faxed to you upon your faxed request to 601-359-6159;

- Brown’s Boundary Control/Legal Principles, 2003, Robilllard et al.;

- Surveying Practice (2nd ed.), P. Kissam;

- Definitions of Surveying and Associated Terms, ACSM, available at www.ACSM.net.

I hope this helps

Lamon has a pretty good list.

I took the exam in April of 2002. At that time is was at least 100 questions, and was closed book at that time. I would be greatly suprised if the exam is not closed book now. It was a tough exam.

Definitely make sure to get the books from the MAPS Organization. The Gideon Fitz instructions were on the exam, as was the minimum standards for surveys.

I hope this helps.

It's been nine years since I took the MS exam, but I doubt it has changed too much. I studied the suggested materials on Lamon's list, especially the first two. They are the most specific for MS. Being well familiar with them, I didn't find the exam to be that difficult.

I took the Mississippi Exam back in the '80's and the big thing I remember was having to know the names of all of their Baselines and Mederians. They let me use my HP 41 and I had written a program that listed all of them. Probably could have learned them as fast as doing the program, but I believe in using my tools to the maximum extent. They probably had a question or 2 about State Plane Coordinates. The test took about 15 minutes to finish.

The exam that I took in 2002, was a full two hours.

I would spend the majority of my time studying the MS laws/rules and the GLO manual.

I took the exam in Oct 2006. Lamon Miller's list agrees with current info listed on the MS Board site and is the same info I used to prepare for the exam. Know Surveying Standards.

Good luck!
