I'm in the field now.
I would love to hear about the processor speed compared to other locators.

Thanks, I actually purchased mine from a different vendor (in Massachusetts) pre Bob's invovlment when it was sold as Magnawand http://www.magnawand.com/Home.html Magnawand has been around since 1988 per their website.

I do have one of these also:
It's small and pocket-sized, but pinpoints the iron in the hole nicely, so digging is kept to a minimum. Important in frozen ground.
@WF Wenzel
I like the idea of small, light.
Portable is so important.

Here is the LATEST one from Garrett:

I absolutely like the idea of small and light.
I don't like the color, but it says it is a little better than the one wfwenzel posted above, in that it "localizes" to local attractions faster.
I can sure appreciate SMALL and LIGHT.
I'll be testing one of these soon. Thanks!

Have you tested the mag locator that works with the javad box? The tip replaces the rod tip for the RTK unit or you can put it in your pocket about 3 inches long.
Thx,
L
No, I have NOT tested it. One of my surveyor buds just got one though, and I plan to test it. IF it is significantly better, then I'll buy it.
The only reason I like the Javad LS, is it is SIGNIFICANTLY better than anything I have ever seen.
I like the idea of a SEPARATE from the LS metal detector.
My work flow is such that IF I have my LS on a RAUNCHY point, set up to AUTOMATICALLY flush out the bad shots, and store only the good ones. This ties up the LS. It's busy. The Javad Metal Detector is DEPENDENT on the LS, to work. It uses bluetooth, to express it's sound through the LS. This effectively TIES up the LS in a number of ways. 1.) It has to be near the point I am searching for. 2.) I don't yet know if it will "Work while the LS is working", but I doubt it. Because the LS makes noises, to indicate what it is doing. So, I am pretty sure that it is exclusive, in it's tasks. Can't collect a shot at the SAME time it is metal detecting. (IF it is set up to simply go silent, in the collection mode, and give precedence to the metal detector noises, then I'd be wrong here). But I don't yet know.
I like to leave the LS working, while I'm DIGGING out other points. Even if it is only comparable, there is something to be said for SMALL and PORTABLE. I cannot afford to BUY every metal detector out there, and LEARN them, and COMPARE them.
BUT, that Garrett, I can buy, and compare. That will serve a number of purposes.
IF it is good, I can use it.
IF it is mediocre, I can keep it as a backup, knowing it's limitations.
IF it is poor, well, I ain't lost much. AND I can loan it to my brother in law, who likes to occasionally borrow my tools! (Grin)
Any way, I want a metal detector, that is 1" dia, 10" long, has a removable fiberglass handle. Has electrodes on the tip, so it has a CATTLE PROD TASER in it, for animal defense, has a built in speaker, that is nice and loud, and can be operated with bluetooth, through a cell phone, with an app. AND it's independent of any other system, so it does not tie up the GPS.
Most of the time, pop the TASER a few times, and bad dogs take off. They SMELL the ozone, and hear the SPARK, and skeeDaddle! And, with a removable handle, I can leave the handle behind, walk to the backcountry, cut a sapling, and attach it as a handle to the metal detector. (no taser control at handle, but so what!)
Hey, Javad did not ask me, when he decided to build his unit... ! But, that is my purely personal and independent opinion of what I think I want in a metal detector. 🙂
I'm still a surveyor. I am independent, and still mix and match, using what I like best.
I plan to order one of those Garrett's above, just for my own fun. Cheap enough!

Yeah, the best gear is the gear you have on you when you need it.
I like the AT because it's orange. I've lost my black one several times, and that wastes time looking for it. It's also got a lanyard loop, so it can clip to a rod or belt easily.
The AT is also waterproof, my Propointer II wasn't. 🙁 It stays in the basement.
From Garrett: The Pro-Pointer AT is our most advanced and versatile pinpointer.

I only buy this stuff from smaller dealers; they are out there, easy to find and at discounted prices.

That looks really intriguing. Are you able to use that instead of a larger type locator?

That is to used to pinpoint once you have begun digging. It will not detect anywhere near as deep as a "pipe finder".
If you are looking into buying one, all of the various manufacturers of metal detectors make something similar (White's, Fisher, Garrett, Minelab, Makro, Nokta, Tesoro).
I think the Garrett and Minelab brand are fairly popular.
They will detect more than just iron, which makes them useful for finding brass tags next to those old unmarked 3/4 IP's
