We purchased a Leica LS10 digital level earlier this year. I run the onboard program, which I really like, and I keep level notes in a field book. I download fix points (BMs) and measurements in a tabular format from the level via a thumb drive, edit it in Notepad, and print it out.
I don’t like the fact that the line of sight test, or peg test, isn’t recorded in the level for downloading. Yes, I could record the peg test in a field book, but we paid a lot of money for the level, and it should reduce our work load, not add to it.
We have a Carlson RT5 tablet running SurvPC 7. I finally got around to testing the SurvPC 7 level program with the level, but to my great disappointment SurvPC 7 doesn’t have a driver for the LS10. According to Carlson tech support, another client called several weeks ago with the same issue. I can only assume that Carlson is prioritizing other segments of the surveying market. I met Bruce Carlson at the Orlando POB conference in 2001. He was showing me his new Tsunami software, which ran on a laptop mounted on a tripod. I would say to Bruce, if I could speak to him, don’t forget about the little things that made your software great.
This from Google AI just in case it is helpful:
- Complete the Routine: Navigate to Main Menu > Tools > Adjust > F1 Line Of Sight.
- Execute Measurements: Follow the on-screen prompts to measure staff positions (such as the A x Bx or A x x B methods) for both setups.
- Insert a compatible USB memory stick into the instrument port.

That was the Point of Beginning magazine.
