The manual for the TS12 was copy righted 10 years ago, that's probably a pretty good indication.?ÿ The more important question is whether is serviceable and still supported.

I believe it was the replacement for the TCRP1200+ series and was almost the same machine.?ÿ I've been using a TCRP1203+ (built in 2010) for the last couple years and I'm slowly transitioning over to a new Trimble s5. After using the s5 I realized just how good the 1203+ is. The ts12 is probably like 8-10 years old give or take? Should say inside the battery housing.

@chris-bouffard?ÿ

The seller sent me a photo. ?ÿMfg date is 2014, and same for the CS15 with it, ?ÿThe MH16 handle is 2015.

I noted that the one reported stolen recently (Brooklyn NYC) on another part of the forum was 2017 so it was current at least until then.

Would you guys consider offering me some advice on what to check when I see the machine next week? ?ÿI am thinking these items:

Battery voltages (I have a Fluke)
Test the laser plummet
Power Search function (listen for odd noises, bad gears/motors?)
EDM (outside)
Turn a few angles
Radio function (that seems to be a weak point in some robotic TSs)
General computer functions on both pieces
Test taking off info with the CS15
Go thru the screens, test setting up a project and put in a few points, etc
ƒ?›ƒ?› Does anything else jump out?
Many thanks for any replies!!

@lucek?ÿ

Better ergonomics and design, shoots way way faster (1 second vs like 3 or more on the s5 in semi active mode), better reflectorless (accuracy and laser visibility), laser plummet vs optical plummet, accuracy (although I will run the collimation check and adjust on the s5 this weekend - I have only been using it for half of my work and it's less than 2 months old).

I prefer the level screen on the Leica (I don't use the data collector to level - Trimble wants to kick you out of the level screen asap to attempt to connect and then still sometimes has issues connecting).

A display with distance and horizontal and vertical angles, etc (can possibly finish a job with a dead data collector)... Powersearch, meaning no need to fiddle with the joystick for 10 seconds to be sure it's actually going to find me. The prediction is better if I walk past ab obstruction (5 seconds, if I make it to the other side of a trailer or vehicle etc - the Leica will keep moving and pick me up on the other side. The Leica doesn't usually lock onto vests and windows, meaning it doesn't require a $5500, delicate and less accurate prism to do solo work.?ÿ

The big advantage to the Trimble is working in treed areas with the active prism, and I don't worry about Bluetooth range (sometimes less than 200m with the Panasonic fz-m1 and the rh17). Since 70% of my work is in subdivisions, I'm usually not dealing with these conditions, so Leica would have been the better choice for my usage.?ÿ

For now I have both in the truck. Waiting for either an update to the tsc5 (some really annoying issues with it) or radio and software to run access on the Panasonic, for now I'm only using the s5 when it happens to be a treed area or I'm worried about Bluetooth range. Switching back and forth has given me a real comparison between the 2.

These are just the ones off the top of my head. I didn't expect to find so many things I didn't like, when so many people swear by Trimble robots.?ÿ

@payneww1970quad?ÿ

Radio seemed to be bad on our cs15, but I never could have used that data collector for the numbers of points I'm usually dealing with in a day. Just too slow and clunky and the Leica smartworx software did not look to be very good.?ÿ

I would try to shoot 2 faces and see what horizontal angle difference you get. Ours is really tight. Test the laser plummet and laser pointer. Can't think of anything else you didn't already list.?ÿ

@350rocketmike?ÿ

I've been swearing AT my Trimble robot for the past several days.?ÿ I hate waiting for the lock and then search is utterly useless esp when you tap accidentally...,

@jitterboogie?ÿ

Exactly my experience. I was dumbfounded that it's like this. Once you have a lock usually it's pretty good about keeping it. But sometimes it just can't keep it, so search is kind of important and they didn't design it well for that. I wish we had gotten the s7 with the Vision camera for getting a lock instead of the useless guidelights but we were kind of talked out of it.?ÿ

@lucek?ÿ

I don't really know the answer to this, although I've read claims that Leica has gone downhill since the tps1200 series...

Also almost all of the people I know personally that used Trimble, really only used Trimble, as that's what the company purchased. They didn't have anything to compare it to (except the Sokkia I was using at the time) and comparing the Sokkia and Trimble the Trimble is hands down better just because of its ability to track a prism. When I got the Leica (originally just set up with parani bt adaptors) one of the same guys that said "what is wrong with this thing?" when we were using the Sokkia ix, said the Leica was basically keeping lock like his old s6 was. But that's all he ever used besides an sx10.?ÿ

@lucek?ÿ

salesmanship.

I barely got a 1539' shot the other day line of sight because the radio kept dropping.

I have ways to get it off the ground and out farther, but wow. they say it's capable of shooting 5km

bull$#!t

@jitterboogie?ÿ

Well to be fair, I can't get anywhere near that far with the Bluetooth on the Leica/Panasonic. I'm not sure if any of them work reliably at that distance. I rarely need to shoot further than 900 feet. It's just all the other things that I don't like.?ÿ

Who's idea was it to make left turn right on the horizontal motor knob? And how fast do they think we need those knobs to turn the thing??ÿ

@lucek just Check the reflector on Trimble S5 is totally waste. A Leica disti it has a brighter red beam. Also Survce map program has too many function comparing with the Trimble access. Also for my changing to S5 is a waste of money.

@johnymal?ÿ

As for?ÿ gps receiver?ÿ I have carlson brx7 and survce software which i love

As for the total station, I have a trimble SPS 620, it has some disadvantages when it comes to ergonomics, but it is a solid, reliable total station.

Something like powesearch would be nice.

I might as well quickly demonstrate the difference, down here in my basement both are visible. Under normal daytime usage the Trimble isn't unless it's extremely cloudy or you're in the shade.?ÿ

Also for an example of inconvenience, I had the Leica ready to go without a data collector 2 minutes ago...the Trimble forces me to use the data collector... I turned it on and missed my 10 second opportunity to level it on the screen, before you either have to level with the data collector (or turn it off and on again to level it on the TS) before it will do anything...

The difference isn't nearly as noticeable here, but out in daylight you can see the Leica laser and you can't see the Trimble.?ÿ

My understanding is that the TS12 was put out to support fleet level users of 1200 series instruments that needed to keep going with smartworx etc when the 1200's reached end of life/support.

A fine thing to do in my opinion. Smartworks is a great program.

Enjoying this discussion (the lack of uniform opinions is of course frustrating, but I understand it's the way things are with equipment preferences & experiences), but may we pause things for a question about this 2014 Leica TS 12 I'm looking at?

I'm wondering about what looks like a repair on the included prism. Can anyone comment on whether or not the device is likely usable with that repair in place? ?ÿThe whole kit n caboodle is being sold as is/no warranty. ?ÿThe repair material looks rather thick and opaque.
