Hi Leica guys!

I am having connection issue between the RH16 and my total station. I noticed that physical connection between the two components is not a snug fit. I decided to remove the rubber pad at connection pins that came with the RH16 and the connection failure is now gone. Is it a good idea to remove that rubber? Is there any other workaround?

Thank you.

Regards.

I don't think I would have removed them, especially if you work in tropical climate. I think the rubbers have something to do with your IP code.
If it were me, I would first look at the mounting studs on the instrument standard to see if they were loose or worn. Next I would look at the spring loaded contacts on the radio handle to see if they had a full range of motion. You can do this by taking a very small screwdriver, or mechanical pencil tip, and depressing the spring loaded contacts, then slide the pencil or screwdriver off to the side, and allow the contact to snap into place. Repeat this a few times.
I've seen this happen on different battery handles. Either the springs get relaxed or fatigued, or maybe crud builds up in the apparatus.

They never used to have those rubber seals, but handles were getting ruined in the rain due to water intrusion so they engineered those as a fix. Ive found that in general you just need to push down hard when applying the handle and you'll get a good connection. I'll also sometimes gently clean the handle contacts with a pencil eraser if I'm having any issues, but be careful not to damage the connection.
