Hello, Hope everyone is having a good holiday week end, its light duty for me today refurbishing?ÿ and claening equipment, studying and this question to you folks. I'm new to Leica having used Trimble, TBC?ÿ and I own Javad equipment, I've been reviewing everything that's online and downloaded manuals but there always seems to be something missing with their material. I currently work for a municipality so we get these simple engineering design topos. When I got here the system in place was put together by someone who didn't care and wasn't in the position very long so we are kind of starting from scratch.?ÿ
I've noticed in settings that there is a toggle for (GS only)?ÿ ?ÿ(TS only) ?ÿ and?ÿ ?ÿ(Both GS and TS)
Typically in the past I'd keep GNSS and Robotic collections separate. Set a couple of control points with the GPS, run static on them while collecting.?ÿ
Then set up on them using an autonomous datum with angle only backsight, then 1st shot is for distance. Traverse to whatever is needed and close. Collect further control with GPS.
Process GPS, bring to ground and then translate, rotate autonomous robotic to control.
Has Leica streamlined this, if so could someone please outline a workflow with some nuts n bolts elections or point me to a video or manual that best uses Leica equipment in this type of survey?
Thanks in advance for considering this question, could use a hand figuring this out, Thank You!
Paul

I've been using Leica GNSS & TPS since the 1200's came out. (actually in my 30+ years I have never used anything but Wild/Leica theodolites).?ÿ Until Infinity came out, my work flow was similar to yours, collecting GNSS and TPS data in separate files then processing in LGO and LisCad.?ÿ
It should be noted that I rarely work in anything but grid and I always specify the grid system in the CS.?ÿ You can use Infinity to create a truncated ground coordinate system later if you choose.?ÿ As for the 'GS Only', 'TS Only' and 'Both GS & TS' settings, I just switch between GS & TS as needed.?ÿ It does not affect the database, just the CS connections and if you use the 'both' method the CS screams at you when you get out of Bluetooth range of the GS.?ÿ The only time I have used the 'both' option is when I have had my GS16 mounted on top of the prism because I knew I would be need to take a couple of RTK topo shots interspersed in the TS shots.
Infinity does a pretty good job of adjusting terrestrial and GNSS data together and now I just collet everything in the same file.?ÿ My typical flow is to set a couple of control points (100 & 101) and occupy them with GNSS, preferably utilizing network RTK while collecting raw data.?ÿ I then proceed to setup using the 'known backsite' method and carry on.?ÿ If for some reason I do not have RTK on site I will add a distinguishing suffix to the autonomous BS point number (101G) and still use the 'known backsite' setup using the GNSS BS (101G).?ÿ Once I have completed the setup I turn angles using the actual BS number (101).?ÿ Side note, I think you could skip the whole false numbering thing.?ÿ Measured coordinate values in Captivate are dynamic until the are used as a setup point I think the terrestrial measurements to the BS will hold over the autonomous GNSS coordinate.?ÿ I retie the GNSS points, shooting for a 4 hour shift, before I leave the site.?ÿ Back in the office using Infinity, I strip out the suffix and process the raw GNSS if needed.?ÿ For the TPS data I make sure that I have created 'sets' for each of the control tie.?ÿ I then adjust the combined GNSS & TPS data, making sure to check the 'use reduced observations' under the advanced terrestrial tab.?ÿ This way just the reduced TS sets are used in the adjustment.?ÿ Once the adjustment is complete you need to check your setups to ensure they are using the adjusted point class for the setup and BS.

Hey John,
Thanks for taking the time. I noticed the bluetooth the other day doing just that. We'll be out tomorrow and look forward to using your methods and will let you know how it goes. Thanks again for your help!?ÿ?ÿ
@john-putnam Hello John,
Thanks again for your help, we've been moving robotic sets using the known back sight per your suggestion with some success. We do not have the whole process down yet but we're working on it. I'm finding out the differences plus or minus between Trimble and Leica, I believe its just going to take time and experience but Thanks for taking the time.

@rlshound Hi Paul
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Leica and Trimble, and who has gathered more advantages?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Leica and Trimble
Lieca over Trimble? Or Lieca and Trimble over the rest?
The thing I really like about Leica is the thought that has gone into the accessories - the total package. Everything works together really well. The cases are well organized to?ÿ include everything just so in as small a space as practical. The vertical offsets of the glass/carrier combination on a tribrach are exactly the same as the total station. The "self-closing" tripods.?ÿ And everything is top quality. I recently bought Leica GPS, and therefore committed to future purchases of Leica gear, because I became convinced that they were a half-step ahead of Trimble on the technology side.?ÿ?ÿ
The thing I like about Trimble is the way the total station finds and tracks the diode on the target. And Access software is good, IMO. The equipment is also very high quality. I only wish they paid as much attention to the accessories as Leica does.?ÿ
My comments about Leica apply to Geomax and Carlson total stations. My comments about Trimble apply to several clone brands, but not to Spectra Precision Instruments, which is owned by Trimble. SP is an entirely different product line.
