Side note to the thread I know but it's not everyday another surveyor talks about a Suzuki Samurai for gettin' around. I wouldn't trade mine for anything. Used to have one with no doors, windshield or roof on 35's and Ford running gear. It wasn't for work though, only for after...

Naw, ours is a bone stock 88.5. And the body is not in great shape. The soft top is worn out, the turn signals and such have stopped working cause of rain getting into the steering column with the top and doors off. But that thing will go wherever you point it!

That's about the ugliest truck I've ever seen. What is it? (Aside from being part locomotive.)

My old man called me a few days ago to tell me he was gonna get rid of his 01 Jeep Cherokee and said to keep it in mind if I heard of anyone lookin. I told him I would buy it. I am thinking about how to set it up for the field too.

I thought I wanted a Wrangler too. Then I rode in one. I'm 6'2" NOPE.
Not without lifting the top. I am not gonna fit.
Maybe install a fish bowel for my head!

I had a plan to use a Jeep Cherokee Laredo when SWMBO was finished with it.

Straight 6 and about 20mpg, tilt down rear seat (2/5 onleft - 3/5 onright), top basket rack, towing and offroad package and mucho power.

When she was finished it was totaled by getting tboned on the passenger side.

Would have been a great crew truck.

The reason I got it for her was because it was built like a tank and it did its job and any thing less and the results would have been very serious.
Banged up bruised and some micro stitches under the scalp line where a figurine broke and hit her head.
She was out and about shopping for a new vehicle about a week later.

I worked out of an SUV before, but never a cherokee. I did have a really nice work box set up in the back of it though. Made out of plywood. Tough to explain, but I had three tripod holders, all in a row.. All lined with rug, so the tripods didnt get bounced up and down on a hard surface. Each with a little bit bigger then the average tripods dimensions. Prevented forever tightening legs that way. Same with my Schonstedt. That was never in the case, but in another compartment just a 1/4" or so bigger then the dimensions of the detector, also lined with rug. Well protected, and no room for it to be moved around. Below everything, It had a slide out drawer, about 4-6" high, to put the small tools of the trade, paint etc. I would pile lathe on top, and in a side plywood box about 5' long, have all my tools like sledges, shovels etc. Rather pull out a tray and pressure wash it, then vacuum up the rug underneath. The whole thing was on two sliders about an 2" high, Under that, went my survey marker posts, and Iron pins. The latter was a safety thing. Easier to put them on top, but if you are in an accident, where is momentum going to take them? I would rather have my feet hit by them, then the back of my skull.

I also would never leave my TS in the back like that. Maybe on a job yes. Other then that, I would have it seatbelted in the back seat. For something that is worth more then the truck itself, a little prevention goes a long way.

I remember my dad using an old FJ style landcruiser to survey out of for awhile in the early 80's. I really don't remember how he fit all the stuff in, except I remember lath and t-posts being bungee tied to the front bumper. I want to say he had some wooden boxes built in the back on the floor for the tripod, stakes, nails, and a cushion for the EDM to ride on next to the aater can, but that was so long ago.
