I thought it was odd that the seller seems to have purposely put his/her finger over the serial number in the pics. Maybe I'm just paranoid ...

Looks maybe stolen to me too. The photo you reference showing the finger over the serial number - that was done on purpose to hide the serial number....

Also, from Miami (which has a big problem with surveying equipment theft), and doesn't appear to include chargers ... when the chargers are missing, to me, it's a sign it was possibly stolen out of a truck ...

Yup, I agree. The ring he wears in the photos doesn't look like a ring a surveyor would wear. And his username is weird too. myamimoney.

So, let's say someone buys this, looking for a good deal, but not knowing whether it is stolen or not. Is there any sort of website where someone could go to check out whether it is stolen?

I'd like to see a website dedicated to this sort of thing. Ebay and Craiglist are both amazing markets, but buyers on each system have to more or less guess whether an item is legit, which is difficult (maybe not in this case), and those who own equipment have no mechanism (that I know of) to protect their ownership.

How about a website where owners of survey equipment could "register" the serial numbers of all the significant equipment they have, and in the event something is stolen could mark such equipment as stolen/missing? Such a website would allow buyers to check their purchase before, during, or after a sale, and if they found a serial number that was tagged as stolen, could report same to authorities. Even if they checked after a sale, eBay would guarantee their purchase for 45 days.

Has anyone bothered to alert eBay to this potential problem? I have done so in the past and those sellers all got banned and turned in to the local authorities. eBay doesn't play around with this stuff.

In addition, while it is in a correct category, it does not list the date of manufacture, so does not fall under the ebay capitol investment fraud protection. If you buy it and it's stolen, you're on your own and could lose whatever you paid.
