That's pretty low. It could be several times that before becoming "on the high side".

Oregon's board is "semi-autonomous". Which means that it is self sustaining financially. The biannual fee is $360. For that price, among other things, we get a couple of full time investigators and some freedom from the political side.

The board is a joint board with the Professional Engineers under the Secretary of State. We have 1220 Surveyors in the state, so the $50 biannual renewal fee produces at best $30,500 annually. The Surveyors on the board do it as a service and are not justly compensated. I just do not believe the state is very concerned with our profession. This may not be the case in every state. I believe the AMA and American Bar Association could teach us about the self regulation of a profession. If you are happy with the way it is working in your state, by all means leave it alone.

Ah yeah, the are quite a few differences in how some of the state licensing boards operate. I agree with Mark, that is a pretty low biannual fee and I'm sure it makes it difficult to operate with that kind of funding. Some boards operate within the general fund and others like ours are self-sustaining. Interesting you brought up the State Bar. Ours is currently under fire and review due to not operating efficiently and appropriately. Something about failing to justify the lack of disciplining its members.

That sounds tedious and very dull. Think of all the engineer stories you'd have after deregulation. 😀
