I'm wondering if any of you have taken photos of surveyors along the highway with traffic going by? Preferably with everyone wearing orange safety vests and orange cones in the shot. Bonus points for signage also in the shot.
I'd like to use the photo for a mini-project / RPLS Today promo piece to be posted here and on social media, so I'd like to have permission to use the photo as such. Any photo submissions need to be your own photos and you must have permission to grant rights to me for my use. By posting them here, you are essentially saying that I am allowed to use them. 🙂
Thanks!
I have a mental image that I'll share.
I applied for a PennDOT engineering job on a mainly night time road replacement project in Philadelphia. My interview was on site with the night supervisor. The interview went well, then he asked if I wanted to see the job site. The contractor was then working on the Schuylkill Expressway at the Philadelphia Post Office. It was extremely noisy and difficult to concentrate. I was paying attention to the repair work when I comprehended I was 2 feet into an open traveled lane. I typed up a "Removal From Consideration Letter" as soon as I got home. My wife and I were both thankful I was able to type that letter.
I could have been much closer to that pavement than I ever intended.
I still see that image very vividly and need no Kodachrome.

Attached are a few that I think might help you. If so, you are welcome to them. I can send them to you in higher rez if you need, or I have a few more on my work computer.
The ASHTO approved safety vest is green not orange. My crews wear green on the road and orange in the woods. Monte's examples is a great example of taking safety seriously. Traffic control at dangerous locations should always be included in the proposal. If the Client is unwilling to pay for it, Paul's approach is best. No job is worth taking on unnecessary risk. Cars not snakes, bees or shotguns are the most dangerous thing we face as Surveyors.

Yes, Orange is the color of barrels and cones amongst other things that tend to get run over. One caveat though , in the railroad world green means go so they require orange in their ROW.
Just don't do it!
Don't perpetuate the image of the surveyor by the side of the road...
Find another way...
Tell a different story...
Show a drone...
Show a bathy survey...
Show a surveyor operating a mobile scanning vehicle...
Show someone using GPS in an unusual spot...
Show someone editing a scan or a lidar data set...
Show someone in a law library...
Break the cycle... destroy the perception...
Show someone with a GIS...
