I needed 2 deeds, from a town 1 HR from me. I went online, found book and pages.
I called tax office. I don't go to this county very often. They sent me to clerks office. Clerks office sent me to fidlar.
They are some kind of online deed repository. They charged 6.95 for every deed I clicked on. In 6 minutes, I had a bill of $27.50. But still none of the deeds I needed. I gave up, a little frustrated. Drove to Arkadelphia.?ÿ I came upon a car, in a long straight stretch, going slow, and wobbling on the road. In a double line, no passing zone. I could see over 2000'. In a little bit, the road dropped into a small dip, and that made it a no passing zone.
I punched the little camry, and swiftly and safely passed.
2 miles down the road, blue lights.
I'd forgotten all about passing. I pulled over, rolled to a near stop, then turned left across the road, into a drive to get us both a bit more away from the road.?ÿ
I waited. A large black policeman approached. "Do you know why I pulled you over?"
No sir.
Are you in a hurry? Some kind of emergency?
No sir.
You passed in a no passing zone.
Yes sir.
Can I see your drivers license?
Yes sir. (Handing it to him)
Be right back.
Ok.
Ok, you check out. Don't pass like that anymore. I'm letting you go.
Thank you.
But hang on, what's the blood on the back of your car? (Second police from passenger side approaches)?ÿ
Um... Let me get my phone. I show them a deer tied on the trunk. At the same time, they both said: "but this blood is on the other side". Yeah, different deer, I replied.?ÿ
Ok, hang on a bit. We've got something for you. They go back, and get a frozen turkey. They give it to me. I then showed them a pic of me, and family.?ÿ
Then, they asked me for the turkey back.?ÿ
They take it back, and put it in their car. It's a big one. Maybe a Ford Explorer, or expedition. Then, they gave me a huge turkey. Maybe 21 pounds or so. And said "happy Thanksgiving".
I think it was the very best experience I've had with getting pulled over.
I went on, got my deeds. One of them was page 19 of 23 page deed. No wonder Fidlar bunch was hard to work with.
Thanksgiving will be extra special this year, with a turkey from some fine policemen.

Read up on Fidlar to discover they are the company behind Laredo software that some nearby counties use.?ÿ They make a deal with the county to put all old documents into a searchable software file such that there are no longer paper deed records in volumes in the Register of Deeds Office.?ÿ I assume updates occur frequently, probably by the County staff.?ÿ Voila!?ÿ The County appears to have entered the 21st Century.?ÿ Meanwhile, Fidlar has a quadrillion deed, mortgage, survey plats, etc. in their central data file.?ÿ As they get more and more counties to use their services they are assembling an outrageous amount of information which they can market to various interested parties.
BTW, type in Fidlar to do a search.?ÿ The first thing you find is not something involving real estate records.?ÿ But, you will find what fidlar means.?ÿ Prudes need to skip this, though.
@holy-cow Luckily Georgia has the GSCCA, the Georgia Superior Court Clerks Cooperative Authority.?ÿ Every document recorded has a fee charged ($1?) which goes to scanning, storing, and providing the documents. A subscription is required ($10 per month?) and a $0.25 per document to print.?ÿ They DO NOT have all documents (started in the 1990s) but some counties have scanned documents prior to the enactment of the legislation.?ÿ The County in which I live, Cobb,?ÿ has free access to records accessible on line with no fee to print.?ÿ I always printed to a PDF and saved them with the digital data for the project.

One county around here does Larado/Tapistry and its terrible to work with. Hard to find the right documents and they aren't bashful about charging you. Here we have Landshark and it is a dream. Everything is available on it. Deeds, plats, minor subdivisions. And you can do a tract search by 1/4 1/4 or grantor/grantee searches. $2 for the first page and $1 for the rest. Very easy to use. And its available 24/7 so when I want to work on the weekends there is no reason not to (kind of). It really helps to make complete researching a breeze without leaving the office.
Great story.?ÿ Never had a bad experience with our Troopers.?ÿ Always calm, cool, professional, cordial.
One thing Florida has right, is free online research for that kind of stuff.?ÿ ?ÿNo need to go anywhere to find just about anything.?ÿ?ÿ
In NC online research for deeds and maps is free in almost every county I work in.
@bushaxe?ÿ
Vermont, by town not county.?ÿ Not free.?ÿ $1 per page and they also charge you $2/hr research time, for using their facilities
Sooooooooooooo, How was the Turkey ??ÿ
Well, Mr turkey is long gone. But this story lives on. Especially the part about the blood on the back of the car. I think the cops have shared pics of the car, with deer on the back. By some of the looks I get!

I think it??s wrong for the Police to stop you because you need 2 deeds 😉
@Dave Karoly, that's funneh!
Btw, after a bit of round and round, the deed people (Fidlar) refunded me my $ 27.50. I may eventually have to work with them, because the courthouse is in contract with them. Actual data storage is no longer "on site", but is online, via these basic business constructs.
If it's not Fidlar, it'll be somebody else.?ÿ
Where, o where has our America gone?
