There's a tee shirt I've seen that shows 'i' saying "Be rational" and 'pi' saying "Get real."
That is one for serious math people.
My thought on i is that is just one more of the little lies that we are told as students coming up. First we are told that 2 is the square root of 4. We dance merrily along believing that is the only answer then BAM we are taught that -2 is also the square root of 4. We continue to dance along believing similar things such as 2 and -2 are the fourth roots of 16 then BAM we are taught there are really four fourth roots of any number, including 16, but first you must accept the concept of i being the square root of -1. Then we discover fractional roots and go stark raving insane.
I was stark raving mad BEFORE I started taking advanced mathematics in college. I think that's why my only choice of career was to be a Land Surveyor. You have to be crazy to do this.
