That's what this tale of government regulation is missing, grand irony: "World First-- Man killed by falling hard hat!"

I wear composite toe boots 7 days a week. They don't mess with the metal detector. But I hate hardhats.
I wear a hardhat anytime I am on a job with others wearing one. If I am the only one there, then I don't. If nobody has called to get portacans delivered to a job, then I don't wear a hardhat. At my age, a portacan is more important than wearing a hardhat just for the sake of following a rule.
I work for a construction company and their policy is to have portacans on any jobsite. If the portacans have not been delivered, then it must not be an active jobsite yet! That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

@jaro, I'm with you on the composite toe boots. I'd never wear another pair of steel toes again. But need to buy the ones that have box toes, or they cut into my toes just like my old skates.
I agree with your hard hat rule too. I've been on many projects where it was nominally a "construction site" in the beginning.
