We were just taking it easy after work when he asked me to get the old transit out. With very little instruction, he was setting it up on level ground. It has a fixed leg tripods, so I let him off easy with the terrain. This time. I don't think he realized before hand that it had belonged to my Dad and it was what I learned on. His face lit up even more when I told him it was the same transit his grandpa used 30+ years ago on a tract we surveyed recently. During that survey he was amazed at how well we checked Dad's numbers from back then.
My Dad gave me his Dietzgen Engineer's Transit a few weeks before he died. The tripod is a collapsible one he acquired about 1980.

From my prospective it adds just the right twist to "following in the footsteps."
First job in Louisiana, the company used K&E Paragon with stiff leg tripod.
Previously, I worked for a firm that used first generation TS.
By observing, patience and practice, I became adept in a short period of time.
Yea, the terrain most of the time was flat but most of the time soft or muddy too. That was the challenge. Experience is the best teacher.
Nice photo and good stuff.
In a button pushing world, with button-pushing problems, this is a good sight to see.

Wow, buy that young man a DJI PHANTOM and let him learn to fly it like an "ace". Then download a trial version of software and have him check the same measurements. Check out "Bow Tie Surveyor's" previous post. I'll bet he would be intrigued.
Nice post! 😎
