So we have a Spectra Focus 50 GPS unit set-up that we use as both a Network rover and a Base/Rover set-up. A few weeks ago we took it in for service because we were having some radio issues where the two receivers were not talking when we tried to use the base/rover set up.

It was in the shop for a few days and they agreed there was some radio issue going on. They decided that the issue was firmware related. So they upgraded the receiver firmware on both units to v1.01 tested the unit and seemed all was fixed.

The receivers talk well with one another now. But things have not been the same since. Both receivers will track GPS and GLONASS but GLONASS will not be used in the solution. When the receivers are floating GLONASS is used - Fixed and the are not.

So I have ensured that the GLONASS is turned on in the data collector. I can see the Russian SVs in the skyplot they are locked but not being used in the solution.

We are running Survey Pro v5.1 in a data collector.

Receiver firmware is V1.01
GNSS/ NAV Process firmware is 481

I talked with Spectra Tech service and they know of no compatibility issues with v1.01 and Survey Pro5.1

Any thoughts? Guesses, Suggestions...

StLSurveyor,

Firm-ware wise you look fine in the receivers. In order for the newest firmware to work properly though you would need to upgrade your Survey Pro to 5.4.1. I am not sure why Tech Support didn't tell you this. 5.4.1 will be worth it for you anyway as it has fixed a number of glitches/issues and brought back some of the old school abilities that the 5/xx versions didn't include.

Another thing to remember is that Spectra receivers will always use GPS satellites before GLONASS satellites for your solutions. You will see these satellites on your sky plot but they will not be used, much like you are seeing now. GLONASS will only be used if it makes the solution better. Many times, even in a float solution, using the GLONASS satellites would be even worse. My wonder here is: Is it ever using the GLONASS satelites, or is it using them sometimes (when it absolutely needs them)?

I figured that was the problem - kinda surprised Spectra isn't aware or willing to admit that there is a problem. Thanks for the reply.

Did you ask the shop to test with one of their collectors that has the latest version of SP?

I can't imagine why that would not be a logical step in the isolation of the issue.

I did test it against another controller - but not one of theirs. I brought this issue to their attention. Turns out they have offered to upgrade the DC fee of charge. Nice.
