I believe in a hell because I saw some yellow jackets crawling from there about 5 seconds after the third one popped me. I got some spray and expended 3 cans over a couple of hours. I'm thinking now they would have enjoyed it more in a salted glass with a lime wedge as they were apparently only imbibing copious amounts.

Try the Bengal Wasp and Hornet Spray or look for "contains petroleum distillates". Stay away from any made by United Industries in St. Louis MO or any that says "no staining, no oily residue".

I was using hedge cutters and they came out from nowhere. I didn't hear anything. No buzzing. No warning scout giving me a fly-by to say "I pity the fool". Just a sudden sharp pain on both thumbs that were clutching the loppers on the same knuckle of each thumb. They must run drills or something. The good news is that the pain from the thumbs is masking the pain on the forearm.

I felt like I was in a gangster movie at one point. I just kept thinking, "not in the face, not in the face!"

Trying to think of a way of letting you know that I think you had a really bad day, but I'm glad it wasnt me, without saying that. As I have grown closer to 50, wasp stings hurt more and longer. A multitude of stings like you have received would send me to a hammock looking for tequila. So I feel like I said something useful, I have good luck with the expanding foam spray I can get from Lowes or Home Depot. It seems the expanding foam grabs them and keeps them from flying out at me.

I think the foam stuff did inconvenience them at least. I'm just glad it didn't stain their yellow jackets.

I thought about diesel, but this is in a residential neighborhood. I didn't want to spark an incident.

If you really want to get rid of them (and spark an incident) get a propane torch from harbor freight. That takes things to a whole new level!

No staining means no petroleum distillates. When they took out the petroleum, they had to add the foam (my opinion only). It helps by giving you almost enough time to run up there and stomp the crap out of them before they shake off the foam. Not advisable if they are coming up out of the ground, that might be counter productive.

Here is my list so far. Of these, my Wife said the Bengal worked the best. I haven't tried it yet but can verify that several of the others don't work.
The last one on the list has an ingredient that apparently has been banned and is no longer available.

For Yellow Jackets, Gas is the trick! Find the hole. Go back after dark and pour a little in the hole and they are done. Spray will get the flying Jackets. But the nest is bunker underground. Sprays just don't penetrate the dug in nest. I've got one I've got to gas.

I always carry Benadryl in my survey chariot for the stings. If taken immediately after the attack the pain is lessened and also the itching.

The best insecticide I know for wasp nest is called "Carbaryl"

Place a spoonful of the powder in the entrance to the nest.

The incoming wasps track it right through the nest - works a treat

I just LOVE seeing them come out all fluffy covered in the stuff

Around the yard, I have found that the yellow jacket traps work very well. I use the translucent yellow ones you hang on a branch with a cone in them.
I move it once they are full and occasionally apply a little moisture to the ball of cotton that has that attractant to refresh it.
I have had to empty one of them 8 times this summer so far. That is a lot of yellow jackets.

In a pinch...
Cut the top off a water bottle.
Fill the bottle with about 1 inch of water (optionally add a very small amount of dish detergent),
Snip off a short piece of bacon and toss it in the water.
Place the top of the bottle (inverted) into the base to form a cone of sorts.

They will fly in to get the bacon and get so frustrated trying to get out that they will die.
The soap plugs up their "lungs" and kills them pretty quick.

Works best if you place several of these traps out at once.
