Interesting... I was thinking it has something to do with trying to have the human interacting with the instruments. That makes sense in regards to your story. Somehow the person NOT touching the equipment makes people uneasy. Hmmmmmm.

If you don't hold your at least one leg of your tripod it is likely to run off. Have you ever seen a three legged tripod running? :-O

For god's sake, it's his tripod, shouldn't he be able to handle it in any manner he sees fit! I mean if he has to erase his number(s) later he'll maybe learn not to grip it so tight. sheesh
