Would it be 11.74 x 2 poles or would it be (11 x 2 poles) + 74 links? Neither one particularly makes sense unless the "0.74" was really a fraction less than 0.50, like 0.24.
I have my two answers:
11 x 66 = 726'
.74 x 66 = 48.84'
The 1/2 is where my problem is. Is that 1/2 of a link, (0.33') or 1/2 if a chain, (33 feet)
O well....
I get 387.4 feet. (11.74 times 33')
Nate-
As eleven point seven four and a half chains (1 chain = 66 feet)
my abacus sez 775.17 feet.
Cheers,
Derek
387.4 sounds like a winner to me!
I'll agree with Derek. He was probably trying to be precise and meant an extra half-link, as 11.745 chains.

10 Chains = 660 footies
1 Chain = 66 footies
.74 Chains = 48.84 footies
½ Link = .33 footies
11.745 x 66 = 775.17 footies
A few weeks ago I came across a call in a recent deed that read "77 feet and 8 inch".
On the original tract deed the same call read "77.08 feet"
Transcribers and legal assistants and other people that can't read correctly and understand the language and terminology used by surveyors also cause problems that transfer errors on paper to what exist on the ground.
It still amazes me when someone thinks that bearings are expressed as hours, minutes and seconds or believe them to be GPS locations.
That also reminds me of the "dollar and two ninety four" dilemma. B-)
I have a half-chain in my office. It's 33 feet (50 links) long. I'm guessing this is what is meant here.
There Are 100 Links In A Chain
I would read that as 11 chains 74.5 links or 775.17'.
The real point is what fits the other data?

but what about 0.74?
if that were the case I think it would be written 12.24 - 1/2 chains

775.17' fits the rest of things....I think! I have not done this survey yet.

11 chains plus 74.5 links.
726 feet + 79.17 feet = 775.17 feet.

Jud
74.5 links can't be more than 66'
Unless the chain happened to be ...
a Pennsylvania Chain or (aka) a Wing Chain - then you would be looking at:
726' + 61.463' = 787.463

Errr.... Dave, last time I went to school .... a long time ago.... each chain contained 100 links.
74.5 links makes perfect sense to me.
