Thanks Andy
She said her Java is lacking. Didn't get into the questions about the developer package since we are both at work, but will get back to you this weekend.
Horizontal Curve iPhone application?YES !!!
I have the i41CX emulator running on my iPhone. It costs $24.98 plus tax and works like a charm. ALL of the HP-67/97 and HP-41 software is available for FREE, including the HP-41 Surveying Module software that will install on the iPhone.

cloud compting for the Iphone
The professor's solution sounds interesting.
I would consider using cloud computing with Sharepoint.
Using Sharepoint would take care of all limited storage problems
associated with hand-held computers.
Also your office, supervisors, LS in charge, and field crew would
have visible interaction of coordinates, distances, even topo photos.
You can even let your clients such as engineers or architects have
access to parts of your Sharepoint account.
I know an inspector who posts photos with notes to Sharepoint so
the city engineer can see in almost real time what is happening at
the job site.
If you do not have Sharepoint, you only need to set up a hotmail account.
Then just use Windows Live.
Other applications involve dumping your data collector or GPS unit to
Sharepoint so that the office can do the reductions and adjustments.
You can even do your cogo computing with storage of your coordinates
in Sharepoint.
