I have a pair of R8 mod 2s that I use as a base and rover setup. Awhile back my rover started turning off and immediately turning back on when I laid the rod down to pound a pin or put it over my shoulder to walk. This causes you to have to reconnect to everything in access. So I decided to swap the base and rover and W.T.H. that one does the same thing. Has anyone experienced this? Its 3 hours to the Trimble dealer and I am a one man show and swamped, so I don't really want to devote a day to resolving something I can do myself if possible. Im hoping this is some type of firmware issue? suggestions/similar experiences?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I have experienced this. It also did it sometimes when setting the rod quickly in a plumb position to get a topo shot. In my case it was a simple fix, the little metal springs that make contact with the battery just needed to be pulled back down. Sort-of "re-sprung" if you will. It also pays to take a pencil eraser to them and your batteries once in a while.

I would have to agree with Plumb might be a battery connection issue or it also might be since the rover rod is screwed just below the board it might have been bumped after time and time of doing that. You have an email I can send you some more information.

Easy Fix, Don't Lay The Rod Down

You need a mini (1/2 size) bipod, so that the rod can safely rest in an almost plumb position, i.e. leaning toward the two side legs. The time spent to set the side legs is compensated by the time saved for reinitialization. It saves your back in not having to bend over to pick the rod up.

I have also seen the mini bipods used on robot rods at rest and to even stabilize the rods for critical shots.

Had that same problem. It was a battery connection issue.

when I first got my R8's in 2006, I had the problem where the battery door would pop open and of course the battery would fall out. I sprayed some WD-40 in the mechanism and never had a problem again. It seemed like the door (cover) would not engage all the way to hold it shut.

I actually sent a letter complaining to Trimble about the fit and finish quality of the battery door on the R8s. That's too much to spend and have that problem.
