i have been told again to just follow instructions. even if they don't make good sense. no explanation, no dialog. nada.
when you have input for others, are YOU a person to keep it to yourself, or do you voice it?

I try to listen.
I try to understand.
I try to keep my yap shut.

In real life I just say it like it is and let the chips fall... seldom the best choice, but I have little to lose and much to gain.
Your Mileage May Vary.

I am the kind of guy that will tell a person that they are wrong and show them on paper.

Then they can decide for themselves if they want to proceed and keep doing it their wrong way.

Nothing wrong with asking why, those who are threatened by questions have usually turned out to have an ego problem. The first time I meet a new crew, I tell them that I don't know it all and that if they see me making a wrong call to tell me. If they have a thought on a better way to do something I want to hear it. Then I tell them that what will piss me off is that if they see me making a wrong call or mistake and they say nothing, then at the first opportunity they will go down the road. Don't lose much time by listening or explaining, more often than not, more gets done and the crew feels like they are an important part of what we doing.

I will always speak up if I think the boss is doing it wrong or I think there is an easier way. However, after having said my (brief) piece, I will follow orders without question.

I've kept my mouth shut when I've seen something going sideways and wish I would've spoke up....

I guess it depends on the circumstances, sometimes, if not most, it's got more to do with money, than anything else.....:-P

Dugger

Edit-I just read this about the Titanic:
The nasty hole gashed in the ship's side by the iceberg was just one of the consequences of the orders given by “the smartest guys in the room”.

And thought fit real well with this post.....

I agree to voice your disagreement. Sometimes people don't like their faulty instructions to be pointed out, but if they are unclear or ambiguous, you may not be able to follow the intent of their instructions. Saying something gives them a chance to fix it. If not, they will get people providing different products until they realize that their original instructions can be interpreted different ways.

I also agree to pick your battles. Sometimes its not worth it to point out a typo or mispelling and sometimes it is (for example).

Depends.

Is it a real estate agent instructing you?

Or a lawyer?

Or your wife?

Girlfriend?

Cow?

Crew hand?

Airplane pilot?

There is a time and place for everything.

According to your profile, you are a PLS. Who is telling you what to do?

(Now, just shut up, and do as you are told!!)

🙂

The context for this might be helpful.

Did they tell you to use a GPS antenna with an umbrella?

To run your level run without a parasol?

To balance your traverse using the compass rule instead of LSA?

If you feel it's that important, write a memo to the person who gave you the instruction, detailing your alternatives, and why they are a better way to go

There's 8 hours in a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year.....you have to pick the fights you want to fight.

I'm prone to ask questions that will highlight either my misunderstanding or the lack of sense in the instruction. Something like: Are you sure the intent is to have me roll the pizza dough in cat litter before adding the main ingredients?

I would offer my input and listen to the answer. Sometimes our suggestions are right, other times they ware wrong for the situation at hand.

However, if your employer is telling you 'to just follow instructions', then do so. If things happen to go your way, what you do not want to do is suggest an "I told you so" attitude with your boss.

Remember who signs your check.
