I have a 17" hp laptop. I think it boots up. It is 9 years old.

The sound and video are dead. Using another monitor isn't working except for the initial boot up screen.

I would just get what I need over the network but the stupid Avast firewall on it won't let the other computers on the network in (although it is setup up identical to the others). That would be the easiest but I have no way to turn off the firewall.

There isn't much that isn't backed up but there are a few things I would like to get.

Is there some way I can connect the hard drive to another computer?

I'm tempted to try putting the hard drive into my 15" hp laptop (a few years newer) but I don't want to break it too.

Go to your local geek shop and ask them if they have external enclosures for 2.5" hard drives or if they have an inexpensive hard drive dock. Either one should allow you to power up the drive and attach it to a computer using a usb port.

I have good news.

I fixed my PM3 that wasn't working.

I took off the screen protector and cleaned the screen and now it's working :-).

This makes me very happy.

There is a hard drive transfer kit that will copy files from hard drives without being installed in a pc

on EBAY do a search for:
usb 2.0 to sata/ide cable kit

does your 15" laptop have ability for dual HD?
i use my old 17" sony just when i need it for things
wife's computer bit it and i took the drive added it to the sony as a slave drive and copied all the data she wanted. i cannot remember by, but we have two slave drives i swap out in that machine to get all those videos and photos.

you can also take any old computer (desktop with adapter) and do the same thing

i have also taken some old machines from the recycling area of the dump. used an air compressor to clean them up, mix and match parts to get the best system and let them rip. i'm trying to piece together a cheap CORS station for my roof and i will probably use an old 800 mhz duron i made from recycled parts.

Old broken laptops (even with the hard drives taken out) can usually bring a few $$$ on ebay. I have sold a few for myself and a neighbor.

I obtained an IDE to USB enclosure.

It's working.

I can get on to the hard drive.

But it won't let me into My Documents, "Access Denied."

How do I get access?

I might try copying it to another drive.

There is a trick to this. Copying to another drive won't work. Forgot how I did it a few years ago. Google the message you're getting and I bet you'll find out how to unlock those files.

If this is on W2K or XP:
Log on with an admistrative account and right click the drive.
Select Proprerties | Security tab.
Click advanced and select Owner tab.
Tick the replace owner box and select the account you logged on with (quite likely there is no other)
Click OK.

Try that. It might work.

I don't have those tabs.

I have Windows XP.

Other people I see are having the same problem with missing tabs, etc.

I am an administrator.

Fortunately most things are in folders in the root directory so those are no problem. I see on the forums there are a lot of different procedures depending on version of windows, service packs, etc.

Try it in safe mode?

Yep, safe mode. I got it.

In safe mode you can change ownership and permissions.

I have XP home, safe mode is the only way to do it.
