Sure are a lot of variations. Probably a regional thing.

These are from about 1963 on a county field crew in Minnesota. I'm pretty sure there was a chart of them in a MnDOT survey manual.

1= jab hand downward once

2= jab downward twice

3= hit knee sideways

4= upper arm out, forearm down

5= arm straight out

6= upper arm out, forearm up

7= hand on shoulder

8= hand on head

9= arm across chest

0= circular motion

We also used crossed arms over the head for a decimal, but I don't think that was in the manual.
