Well I took a chance and bought a Leica NA2002. I have managed to find a cable and comms to suck the data out but now I need to convert the GSI file to csv. I've tried this site and a few other places but not much luck.
If anyone can recommend some free software to do the conversion that would be appreciated.
good link for leica users here

Converts Leica (GSI-8 & GSI-16) and Zeiss (DAT/REC) data files to and from CSV data format
Doesn't seem to cope with Level files though.
The levelpak software was included with it originally I think.
I think LGO (Leica Geomatics Office) should do it.
I think there is an old version at the same link. (leica survey office)
Copan Lite can read GSI total station files, but only the Pro version can read GSI level files.

Does it actually output a GSI file? Or is it a DAT file?
Digilev will adjust a dat file if you want or output just
the raw data in a readable format.
The GSI format is not very complex. I've written programs that read data from GSI files, but its been a long time ago. If you send some sample GSI files, and let me know what fields you want to extract from what type of records, may be I can whip something up.

I've only worked with the level files, but I found the format pretty complicated. Very straightforward in terms of which field is where, but there are so many options that coding a translator was about at the limit of my amateur skill set. But I guess that's what makes me an amateur!
How would one get access to DigiLev?
Seems to be a ODOT private thing.
There was a free software from Lecia called Jessi editor. It would read a NA2003 level and allow you to paste the data into excel.
Thanks all, I think I'll just get the StarNet converter for $200 and be done with it. Programming and extracting data is for people smarter (and more patient) than me.
