Hi,
I'm purchasing a TDL450H external radio for my R10 setup. I am looking at purchasing a 5dB Antenna for the external radio, but I noticed the rubber duck antenna on the rover is 0dB. Will these be compatible together or do I need to match gain at the base and rover?
Thanks!
Jeff
In general more signal is better and there is no need to match gains.
Be aware that if you increase your antenna gain enough you can exceed your licensed ERP level even though the radio power output remains the same.
In general more antenna gain is achieved by an increase in directionality.?ÿ For example, a mundane parabolic antenna might achieve a +28dbi gain but would have to be accurately pointed at the other transceivers' antenna.?ÿ A +5dbi gain whip antenna achieves this by radiating/receiving better in a roughly horizontal direction at the expense of vertical signals.?ÿ For survey equipment links more antenna on either (both) is always better, the only downside being the antenna is longer and ultimately becomes unwieldy.
If you're buying an antenna from Trimble it's ok, the rubber duck antenna is shorter and this has less amplitude. Longer antenna will give longer range, so my guess is the antenna is longer and thus gets a higher dB measure.
It's been a while, so I'm skating along on older theory, so there's that.
Ok, thanks for all the advice, appreciate it!?ÿ
You'll be surprised where the 450 can be set and still pickup the base. That's the real power of the combination. I suggest some testing to get a feel for the ability of the repeater.
