I saw that on radar today.?ÿ Guess you'll be taking off your boots on the back porch for a day or two.

Here in Norman we got about an inch and dodged the heavy stuff.?ÿ But it rained big all around me in the surrounding counties.?ÿ Next week won't be any fun around here either.?ÿ I have been known to stop by a car wash to rinse off my boots before proceeding home.

We have had just enough rain to call it a shower (0.02in) since June.?ÿ Our temps today are supposed to be 89 for a high, but by the end of the week, we are supposed to be back up to just under 100 degrees again.?ÿ I have noticed when I walk the dog in the evenings, we both kick up little puffs of dust....

I use to have family in Scurry, Co.?ÿ The caliche around there would get harder than concrete when it was hot and dry.?ÿ When we'd feed and put up the horses in the evening my MIL would vacuum them off off of them while they munched on oats.?ÿ One or two of them were a little skittish about it but generally they were used to it.?ÿ My father-in-law use to joke about keeping a shaker full of dust on the dinner table for a condiment like salt and pepper.

Yes, the caliche is quite something when dry.  If maintained properly, it makes a better roadbed than asphalt.  I hate having to dig through it.  I had one hand who went from my company off to Lubbock for college, and he hired on as a survey hand up there.  His first day, he went to dig a hole, and he stabbed the shovel down like we do in our hard packed earth, and drew laughs from everyone around.  He said they made fun of him for not knowing how to dig a hole.  Of course, they only knew how to dig in dirt that at least somewhat cooperated!
